By far, though, the highlight of the tour is when Nelson & Co. went to a Tokyo restaurant and ate blowfish. Not only did Nelson eat blowfish filet, he also ate blowfish testicles.

It's hard to tell whether or not he likes it, though the odd guttural sound he made after swallowing the blowfish testicles might give away his true feelings.

People don?t need a full set of working genes to lead healthy lives, a new study shows. People can dispense with at least one active copy of 100 genes and get by without about 20 genes entirely.

Many genetic diseases result from mutations or genetic variants that inactivate genes. Such variants are called loss-of-function variants and were thought to be rare. But as scientists began compiling complete genetic profiles of thousands of people, it became clear that many genes might be dispensable.

This plethora of inactivated genes may make it difficult for scientists to track down disease-causing mutations in people with genetic disorders. But the new study provides some guidelines for telling likely disease-causing variants from benign ones.?

Daniel MacArthur, while working at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Hinxton, England, and his colleagues examined complete genetic blueprints from 185 people who were part of the 1000 Genomes Project, an effort to catalog genetic diversity among people. MacArthur?s team found 1,285 gene-inactivating variants among the volunteers? DNA. Each person?s DNA carried variants that inactivate at least one of the two copies of about 100 genes, with different genes affected in each individual. On average, people of European descent have about 20 completely inactivated genes, the team reports in the Feb. 17 Science.

The researchers also found that some genes get knocked out more often than others. ?They tend to be genes that do not play a major, super-important role in our survival,? says Lluis Quintana-Murci, a population geneticist at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. Many of the frequently hit genes are involved in processes such as detecting smells, or affect how blood type is determined, how muscles work or how the body metabolizes drugs. The researchers found 250 genes in which both copies were shut down in at least one person, indicating those genes aren?t essential for survival.

Previous research has found that long stretches of DNA carrying several genes can be missing from people, and a pilot study from the 1000 Genomes Project estimated that people carry many more inactivated genes. This study counts only variants that are certain to disrupt genes. Quintana-Murci says many other variants not found in this study may also shut down genes.

Easily lost genes may be on the way out, evolutionarily. In nearly 43 percent of people in the study, at least one copy of a gene called VWDE is inactive, perhaps indicating it is on its last evolutionary legs.

Most of the gene-inactivating variants were rare, found in less than 2 percent of people in the study. More than 40 of the rare variants are known to be involved in diseases such as muscular dystrophy in which both copies of the gene are inactive. People in the study carried only one inactive copy of those genes. ?

Disease-causing genes tend to have related genes in other species. The disease genes also interact with other genes in a cell more than apparently benign genes do, the researchers found. Learning these rules may aid in predicting how new mutations affect health.

HARTFORD, Conn. ? State lawmakers and film industry leaders are urging Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and the legislature to continue supporting and promoting the Connecticut film industry.

Waterbury Democrat Rep. Jeffrey Berger joined members of the commerce committee at a news conference Tuesday to thank the governor for supporting the state's film tax credit and digital media industry. Former state House Speaker James Amann and industry professionals joined Berger in urging measures to help strengthen the state's film industry. New Fukushima scare blamed on faulty thermometer (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? A scare over temperatures rising near danger level in a reactor at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, where workers are battling to prevent a resurgence of the radiation crisis, could be a false alarm, the plant operator said on Monday.

Instruments showed the temperature inside the plant's No.2 reactor topped 90 Celsius on Monday, double what it was a month ago and close to boiling point, in which water cooling nuclear fuel in the reactor could evaporate and start a new meltdown.

But a faulty thermometer was likely giving false readings, said Tokyo Electric Power Co, operator of the plant 240 km (150 miles) northeast of Tokyo.

The Fukushima plant's cooling system was wrecked by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, triggering reactor meltdowns and a radiation crisis that has caused widespread contamination and mass evacuations.

Tokyo Electric, or Tepco, said it was able to bring the temperature down at two other places in the reactor to about 33C from over 40C a week ago by pumping more water into it.

"Following our cooling efforts temperatures at the two other locations are declining steadily while that at the location in question keeps rising. This leads us to think that the thermometer at the location in question is not functioning properly, rather than the actual temperature rising," Junichi Matsumoto, Tepco's general manager, told reporters on Monday.

Matsumoto said there was little sign of steam, which would be produced when water is at such a high temperature, and Tepco believes the reactor is still in cold shutdown, meaning temperatures are stable below boiling point.

The government announced on December 16 that the plant's reactors had reached a state of cold shutdown, a milestone in cleanup efforts and a pre-condition for allowing about 80,000 residents evacuated from a 20-km (12-mile) radius of the plant to return home.

Environment Minister Goshi Hosono said he believed the plant was still in cold shutdown but warned against complacency.

"The instruments are showing readings that are difficult to understand but I believe we don't have to change our view that the plant is in cold shutdown," Hosono said in parliament.

"Nevertheless we continue to assess the situation ready for all possibilities."

Glitches continue to dog Tepco nearly a year after the disaster. Heat is not the only problem the utility and its workers have to battle -- sub zero winter temperatures have frozen many parts of the miles of hastily installed plastic pipes at the plant, creating ruptures and causing the radioactive water they carry to leak.

Shattered trust in the safety of nuclear energy has prevented the restart of reactors elsewhere shut for routine maintenance, straining power supply and threatening blackouts.

Only three of Japan's 54 nuclear reactors are now operating. Without approval for restarts, all of them could be shut by the end of April, boosting the use of fossil fuels and adding over $30 billion a year to the nation's energy costs, a government estimate said.

A visiting team of U.N. nuclear experts has backed stress tests aimed at showing Japan's nuclear plants can withstand the sort of disasters that devastated Fukushima Daiichi.
