The restored "Cabaret," minus damage that had prevented a high-definition version, earned the opening spot at the four-day TCM Classic Film Festival. Stars Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey were scheduled to attend Thursday's ceremony marking the musical's 40th anniversary.

Minnelli, whose turn as cabaret singer Sally Bowles captured a best actress Academy Award and cemented her young stardom, said making "Cabaret" was a joyful "secret," filmed in Munich and far away from meddling Los Angeles studio bosses.

Director Bob Fosse "got away with murder. We all did," Minnelli said in a recent phone call from New York. She's on a concert tour, "Confessions," based on her album of the same title.

"We'd take chances, and the studio would send notes like, 'Too cloudy. It will break up on drive-in (screens),'" she recalled. "Fosse would read that out loud, tear it up and throw it over his shoulder ? in front of the whole cast and crew."

Repair attempts using automated digital processing failed, so all 1.4 million frames of the damaged reel were painted by an operator using a computer stylus. The restored version is expected to play on TCM later this year.

For Minnelli, 66, "Cabaret" holds a certain family irony: It reversed an approach to movie musicals she said was pioneered by her late father, famed director Vincente Minnelli, in a 1944 film starring her mother, Judy Garland. The actress-singer and Vincente Minnelli were married from 1945-51. Garland, 47, died in 1969.

"My father changed everything when he did 'Meet Me in St. Louis,'" Minnelli said. "That was the first time a musical had taken the songs outside of the theater, and people sang at home and on the street."

"'Cabaret,'" she said, "changed it back," with Fosse staging nearly all the musical numbers in the nightclub setting. An exception: "Tomorrow Belongs to Me," sung by a handsome, innocent-faced teenage boy, who as the camera pulls back, is chillingly revealed to be garbed in a Nazi uniform.

"Every time I see it, I just keep marveling at Bob Fosse's work, and his choices," Minnelli said of the film

For the second straight day, the presumptive GOP nominee campaigned at a female-owned work site, and denounced Democrats for saying his party is waging "a war on women."

"The real war on women is being waged by the president's failed economic policies," Romney told a crowd packed inside Alpha Graphics, in Hartford, Conn. There, and on Tuesday at a women-owned steel fabrication plant in Delaware, Romney said President Barack Obama's economic policies have disproportionately hurt women.

The events were scheduled before Rick Santorum's unexpected withdrawal removed the last serious barrier to Romney's nomination pursuit. They underscored Romney's sensitivity to Democrats' efforts to link him to controversial GOP-led efforts to limit birth control insurance coverage for women in some workplaces, among other things.

Polls have found a growing "gender gap" in the presidential race. Obama's advantage among women is outpacing Romney's edge among men.

While he spoke in Hartford, Romney's campaign issued statements from Republican women in Congress defending his record. But a conference call with reporters arranged by his campaign hit a snag when aides were asked whether Romney supports the Lilly Ledbetter Act to help women achieve equal pay, the first piece of legislation Obama signed.

"We'll get back to you on that," campaign policy director Lanhee Chen said after a pause.

Democrats gleefully publicized the exchange. They glossed over the fact that the issue was divisive, and Romney would be in line with many GOP lawmakers if he opposed the measure. The 2009 law makes it easier for women to file workplace pay-discrimination cases.

Romney repeated his assertion that women account for 92 percent of those who have lost jobs during Obama's presidency. While that statistic is accurate, it overlooks the fact that more men than women lost jobs early in the Great Recession. The record downturn began in December 2007 and ended in June 2009, covering approximately President George W. Bush's last year in office and Obama's first half-year.

Romney's claim also counts job losses in the first two months of 2009, when the newly inaugurated Obama had scant time to redirect the economy. Government figures show that some 3.4 million men and 1.8 million women have lost jobs since the recession began.

In Hartford, Romney said Obama pursues policies that make it "hard to be a woman in business." He quickly broadened the criticism to all business owners.

"This president has failed American women," Romney said. He vowed to cut corporate taxes and government regulations, which he said would increase job growth for everyone.

Romney is drawing overflow crowds this week, and he briefly spoke in hallways at both of Wednesday's events to people who could not squeeze into the main venue.

In Warwick, R.I., Romney fielded questions from an audience of several hundred, including one query about immigration and border security.

He said Republicans are "the pro-immigration party" and are eager to stop illegal immigration and make room for legal entries. If a foreigner earns an advanced degree and wants to move to the United States, he said, "I'd stick a green card in their diploma."

Phillips angrily signaled back, "Shut up!" The incoming message was jamming him, and he was busy.

Clear signals
The 5,000-watt Marconi system operated with a fairly low frequency, which allowed its signal to travel long distances, especially at night. And on that fateful night, the skies were clear. Transmission went farther without atmospheric distortions from their location in the middle of the North Atlantic.

"When they struck the iceberg, had they not had this facility on board, their distress messages that went out might have reached nearby ships but they would have never reached places where they did reach," said Bill Hayes, a lifelong broadcaster, director of engineering and technology for Iowa Public Television and vice president of the IEEE Broadcast Technology Society.

"He has to tell the same story: 'We ran into an iceberg, we're sinking, we need immediate assistance.' Apparently a lot of them don't understand what's going on," Emery said.

WASHINGTON - The combined effects of exercise plus caffeine consumption may be able to ward off skin cancer, U.S. researchers have reported.

The findings were presented at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting 2012, held in Chicago on March 31- April 4.

The researchers evaluated the effects of caffeine and exercise on mice at high risk for developing skin cancer. Results showed that mice that took a dose of caffeine and exercised with a running wheel experienced 62 percent fewer skin tumors. The volume of tumors also decreased by 85 percent compared with the mice that did not consume caffeine or exercise.

Positive effects were found with either caffeine or exercise alone, but to a lesser extent. Researchers observed a 27 percent reduction in tumors in caffeine-only mice and a 61 percent reduction in tumor size. In the exercise-only mice, researchers found that tumor activity decreased by 35 percent and tumor volume decreased by 70 percent.

"We found that this combination treatment can decrease sunlight-caused skin cancer formation in a mouse model," said Yao-Ping Lu, associate research professor at the Rutgers University. "I believe we may extrapolate these findings to humans and anticipate that we would benefit from these combination treatments as well."?
