Birmingham City Schools superintendent, board president discuss district's probation

Dr. Craig Witherspoon, superintendent of Birmingham City Schools, joined Alabama's 13 Sunday morning to discuss the district's recent probation.

As we've reported, the Birmingham City School district is on probation.

The probation was implemented by the "Southern Association of Colleges and Schools", also known as "SACS."

The organization cited problems with the district's governance and finance.

The system will be reviewed again in February to determine if the probation will be lifted.

Cleveland kidnapping victim Amanda Berry surprises concert crowd

Just a day after kidnapper Ariel Castro plead guilty, one of the three women held captive in his home for a decade made an appearance at a concert. TODAY's Jenna Wolfe reports.

By The Associated Press

One of three women held captive in a Cleveland home for a decade appeared at a public event for the first time since her rescue, a day after her abductor pleaded guilty in the case.

Amanda Berry made a surprise appearance at the daylong concert RoverFest in Cleveland on Saturday night, walking on stage with her family and waving at the cheering crowd. Wearing sunglasses and dressed in jeans and a black T-shirt, Berry smiled broadly while acknowledging the applause, but she didn't address the crowd. The rapper Nelly called Berry back to the stage after his music set.

The appearance came a day after Ariel Castro, a former school bus driver, pleaded guilty to 937 counts in a deal that will send him to prison for life without parole, plus 1,000 years.

Berry, now 27, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight disappeared between 2002 and 2004 when they were 14, 16 and 20 years old. They escaped in May when Berry kicked out part of a door and called to neighbors for help.

Berry told a police dispatcher in a dramatic 911 call: "Help me. I'm Amanda Berry. I've been kidnapped, and I've been missing for 10 years, and I'm, I'm here, I'm free now."

Hennes Paynter Communications

This frame grab image from a July 2, 2013 video courtesy of Hennes Paynter Communications shows freed kidnapped victim Amanda Berry, as she speaks at the law offices of Jones Day in Cleveland, Ohio. Berry made a surprise public appearance at a concert in Cleveland on Saturday.

Castro, 53, who was arrested and jailed shortly afterward, was accused of raping and beating the three repeatedly. He also fathered a 6-year-old daughter with Berry, authorities say.

The women didn't attend the court proceeding but said in a statement that they were relieved by the conviction and looking forward to the end of the legal proceedings.

Berry and the other women said she had accepted a ride from Castro, who had remained friends with DeJesus' family and attended vigils over the years marking her disappearance.

Castro was accused of restraining the women, sometimes chaining them to a pole in a basement, to a bedroom heater or inside a van. The indictment included two counts of aggravated murder related to accusations that he punched and starved one of the women until she miscarried.

Earlier this month, the three women offered thanks on YouTube for emotional and financial backing they've received since going "through hell and back."

UK Border Police can take your phone, and everything inside it

What Governments are doing in relation to our phones is a hot topic at the moment, but a new report out of the UK claims that the Border Police can seize your phone and download all the data within it. The procedure can be applied under a domestic anti-terror law, with a blanket power so broad that reasonable suspicion doesn't even need to be established before hand. The report comes by way of UK newspaper The Telegraph:

Officers use counter-terrorism laws to remove a mobile phone from any passenger they wish coming through UK air, sea and international rail ports and then scour their data.

The blanket power is so broad they do not even have to show reasonable suspicion for seizing the device and can retain the information for ?as long as is necessary?.

Affected data can include call history, contacts, photos, and who the person is texting or emailing, but not the content of the messages. All border crossings fall under this, be that airports, seaports, even the international rail crossing between the UK and France. An independent reviewer of terror laws, David Anderson QC, is expected to raise concerns and recommend proper checks to ensure this power isn't being abused.

Given the furore across the water at this time, this latest report is surely not going to sit well with travellers to the UK, and even nationals. Speaking personally as a Brit, I can imagine how I'd feel if I were presented with this upon my return from a trip. What do you guys think? A step too far under the cover of 'anti-terror,' or are you happier that action is being taken at all?

The Augusta Chronicle

AUGUSTA ? At work, he calls her ?Pastor Andrea,? and she calls him ?Pastor Jason.?

At home, they do without the formal titles. They?re just Andrea and Jason, husband and wife.

The Revs. Jason Peterson and Andrea Windsor-Peterson were recently installed as dual pastors of Advent Lutheran Church.

The church of 300 on Washington Road in Augusta called the new pastors this spring.

?We?re a team,? Jason said. ?We share a calling.?

Together, they hope to work with the congregation to help it continue to grow as a welcoming, life-giving church.

?We want to help everyone to feel they belong and they have purpose in Jesus Christ,? Andrea said. ?All people are welcomed in this place.?

The two met on the first day of class at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, on the steps of their dorm building. Three months later, they were engaged. They married two years after that, in 2002.

After working with separate congregations in South Carolina, they accepted a shared call to Memphis, Tenn., where they worked as ?mission redevelopers,? tasked with reviving a small congregation. They stayed for nine years.

They made the move to Augusta with their two children ? Kate, 8, and Timmy, 7 ? this summer. Jason?s first day was April 28, the 50th anniversary of the church. Andrea stayed in Memphis for a few weeks, while the kids finished school. After three weeks in Augusta, she said, ?I?ve learned just how generous people are. They?re just so wonderful. I can?t tell you what a joy it is to work with them and equip them. It?s sort of a dream call.?

The church was really just looking for one pastor.

?They looked to interview one candidate, but got two,? Jason said. ?There was a real excitement about it.?

While they considered taking separate calls, it?s easier, in some ways, to work together. The family is able to worship together on Sundays. There?s no question about which church the children should attend. Both pastors get time away from preaching, which helps avoid burnout.

The church also benefits from two pastors.

?The gift is you have a choice,? said Andrea. ?You have two different perspectives on how to do something.?

They have different passions in ministry, different styles of teaching and different communication styles.

?It?s becoming a little bit more common, especially in the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America),? Jason said.

Each preaches two Sundays in a row before switching off. When one prepares the sermon, the other administers the sacraments.

?We have this joke that we?re off duty and get to worship,? Andrea said with a laugh.

They spend more time together than most married couples, Jason said. Sometimes it feels as though their marriage and family life are on display, even more so than the average pastor?s, and that?s OK, Andrea said.

?You are on display and it?s humbling,? she said. ?If the people of God weren?t so gracious, it wouldn?t work.?

A few years ago, they set some ground rules.

?We do have one rule,? Andrea said. ?We don?t talk about our moms and the church in our bedroom.?

Vice President Releases Book ?Smritiyan? by Garima Sanjay

The Vice President of India Shri M. Hamid Ansari released a book entitled ?Smritiyan? authored by Smt. Garima Sanjay, a professional author & documentary filmmaker here today. Shri Ansari complimented the author for bringing out a fine book and also wished her good success in her future creative endeavour.

The book says that Life in general throws challenges before we can fulfil our aspirations. At times we beat those challenges, but sometimes, especially in case of our personal and emotional lives, we?re unable to face these challenges and we simply give up, compromise with the situation and accept our failure. In such a situation, we blame our luck; or as shown in stories/ films we blame certain villains in our life for our failures.

Tips for Cheap Craft Supplies and Some Fun Kid Crafts

MP900177857

The kids are out of school and this summer, when we aren?t taking advantage of all the cool free stuff we can do around town, we will be working on some craft projects.

I love crafting with my kids, but it can be pricey to get everything needed for 3 months worth of crafts for 4 kids. Over the years, I?ve learned a bit of what?s a waste and what?s worth the splurge.

Here are a few resources to help you stock up, without breaking the bank, and a few of our favorites crafts.

Stocking Up on Supplies

Shop your home ? It?s always best to take stock of what you already have on hand. You probably have a good deal of supplies around the house, or can quickly save them up (think cans, paper bags, corks etc)

Shop your yard ? take a bucket with you on your next nature walk, and gather little twigs, sticks, rocks and pinecones.

Dollar Tree (or some other dollar store) ? drawing pads, construction paper, toothpicks, popsicle sticks, paper plates stickers, etc can all be found for $1.00; some items are even 3 or 4 for a $1.00. (There is even a great site filled exclusively with crafts made from dollar store supplies.)

Oriental Trading ? Such a great place for stocking up and getting ?everything included? craft kids. I find that waiting a couple of weeks into the summer, after the VBS groups have ordered, things go on sale as they try to clear out the warehouse in anticipation of fall and back-to-school stuff.

A Few Of Our Favorite Crafts

Here are a few of our favorites. Many are kept in rotation year after year, because they are enjoyed so much.

God?s Eye ? remember these from summer camps? So easy to make and only a few supplies needed.

Paper Bead Bracelet ? hang on to some old catalogs and magazines! This craft will put them to good use, and keep your kids busy.

Kaleidoscopes ? I always enjoyed the ?paper tube with melted crayon in wax paper? version as a kid, but this takes it to another level, using stuff you probably already have on hand.

While crafting does take some planning, to ensure everything is ready and all enjoy the process, it doesn?t have to be pricey or difficult.

Steinway accepts $438M buyout from Kohlberg & Co.

(AP) ? The famed piano maker Steinway is hoping that the sale of the company to private equity firm Kohlberg & Co. will strike the right chord.

Steinway Musical Instruments, which has been in business for 160 years, said Monday that it has agreed to be bought by Kohlberg for about $438 million.

Steinway pianos have been a status symbol and a must-have luxury in concert halls for more than a century, but the storied company suffered during the recession. While it has recovered, its shares have not returned to their peak, reached just six months before the recession began.

Last week, the company closed on the sale of Steinway Hall just down the street from Carnegie Hall, its flagship showroom in Manhattan where generations of pianists have taken pianos for a spin.

However, with the housing crisis fading and the U.S. economy picking up steam, Kohlberg is betting on a bright future for Steinway at home and abroad, says Burt Flickinger III, president of retail consultancy Strategic Resource Group.

A typical Steinway grand piano costs around $50,000, but can run much higher.

Kohlberg, which will take the company private, is opening a tender offer to buy all of Steinway's outstanding stock for $35 per share, a 15 percent premium to its Friday closing price of $30.43.

The board of the Waltham, Mass., company unanimously recommended that shareholders tender their stock.

The deal includes a 45-day "go-shop" period in which Steinway may seek out alternative bids.

Steinway & Sons was founded in 1853 by German immigrant Henry Engelhard Steinway in a loft on Manhattan's lower west side. Steinway was a master cabinet maker who built his first piano in the kitchen of his Seesen, Germany home, according to the company website.

Over the next 30 years, Steinway and his sons, C.F. Theodore, Charles, Henry Jr., William and Albert developed the modern piano. The company's products now include Bach Stradivarius trumpets, Selmer Paris saxophones, C.G. Conn French horns, Leblanc clarinets, King trombones, Ludwig snare drums and Steinway & Sons pianos.

"Kohlberg's long history of collaboration to grow and expand some of the world's leading consumer brands makes us an ideal partner for Steinway to accelerate its global expansion, while ensuring the artisanal manufacturing processes that make the company's products unique are preserved, celebrated and treasured," Kohlberg partner Christopher Anderson said.

The buyout is expected to close in the third quarter.

Flickinger says that emerging markets like China present a big opportunity for Steinway and for Kohlberg. "Families will want their children to play on the best piano," Flickinger said of China, the world's second largest economy, where incomes are on the rise.

Shares of Steinway Musical Instruments Inc. jumped $4.83, or more than 15 percent, to $35.26 in afternoon trading. Shares this year have risen close to 70 percent.

Mich. city's changing garage rules worry Arabs

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) ? As early summer days on Orchard Street draw to a close, sliding doors open, inviting fresh air and neighbors into side-by-side garages.

More patio than parking place or storage for power tools, Mariam Khalaf said her garage is primarily for "chilling purposes" ? including smoking, eating and watching TV with family and friends, including next-door neighbors, Muheeb Nabulsy and his wife, Fatima Mkkawi.

Khalaf and Nabulsy say gathering in their east-side garages never invited scrutiny until they installed the sliding doors last year in front of the more traditional electric ones. Now, officials in the Detroit suburb are looking at changing an ordinance on garage use, arguing that as people get a little too comfortable hanging out in the garage, more cars are clogging side streets.

Many who've made the unsanctioned transition are part of Dearborn's nearly 100,000 Arab-American residents, one of the largest such communities outside of the Middle East and a third of the city's population. The garages are a continuation of marathon socializing sessions that started many years ago in their home countries under shady trees, often accompanied by coffee and a water pipe, known as a hookah or argileh.

"They migrated over time to the garage as an extension of the living place, and here comes the complaint from people who don't have that as part of their tradition," said Nabeel Abraham, a Dearborn resident and an instructor and administrator at a Dearborn community college. "I think it's a class, ethnic reaction."

Not so, say Dearborn officials, who say the ordinance-tightening isn't meant to target Arabs or anyone else. They don't want the garages, which they contend aren't built to the same standards as the rest of a home, to become "habitable" places for cooking or sleeping.

They say the structures aren't meant to be living spaces, so building permits can't be issued to convert them. That conversion, city spokeswoman Mary Laundroche said, is not only illegal but also isn't inspected for safety.

"We're trying to find a solution that is safe and acknowledges the way garages are being used," she said.

Khalaf and Nabulsy attended a meeting this spring to explain what they do in their garages ? and what they don't. They were each issued citations last summer and the doors were inspected, though their court challenges are ongoing.

Laundroche said the city is trying to work with residents and enforcement "has been put on hold."

The interiors of Nabulsy's and Khalaf's garages resemble patios outfitted with furniture, TVs and tile floors, but also incorporate storage areas typical of any garage.

Nabulsy said he and his wife were inspired by sliding doors on a nearby garage after renovating their house. They no longer wanted to smoke inside their home but liked having fresh air, a street view and protection from insects and the elements, so they installed their own.

But both said they received "stop-work orders" and visits by a city inspector. Nabulsy said an inspector came twice and saw nothing objectionable, but he hasn't yet received a permit.

"When (the inspector) entered the garage, he said, 'I don't know why I'm here,'" Nabulsy said over coffee and cigarettes during a recent evening in Khalaf's garage. Both even fashioned ramps that allow vehicles to get over the door frames and into the garage.

What any new ordinance will say is unclear. A city attorney is still working on a draft of the revision, which is expected to be ready for the Planning Commission's consideration at its July 8 meeting. An early version prohibited sliding doors and tile floors.

What's tricky is how to define "living space."

"I think your home is your home," said commission Chairman Gary Errigo. "There was someone who spoke who said they're sitting in their garage in a lounge chair and a police car drives by and they pack up their chair and run inside. It shouldn't be like that, and it's not like that."

Errigo uses his garage for his passions: car collecting and art. And he knows of many ? Arabs and non-Arabs ? who do the same.

"The garage ordinance currently says you have to be able to park your car into your garage. Well, there's a lot of folks who just can't do that. Not because they live in their garage, but because they have stuff. ... Man caves, and that kind of thing ? this is the era we're in."

Errigo doesn't think having a spare refrigerator in the garage is a problem, but he doesn't want the structures to become crash pads or places where meals are prepared. In that case, they should be evaluated and taxed accordingly.

If the ordinance is approved by the Planning Commission, the City Council will have the final say.

Abraham said city officials will have to ensure that any changes are enforced evenly and fairly across ethnic, class and neighborhood lines.

"What's the difference between sitting together and smoking an argileh or cigar and having tea, or having a homemade brew?" said Abraham, who doesn't have a garage hangout. "This town has a law for everything and anything ? (it) needs to loosen up a little bit."

Wikileaks founder says Snowden info will keep getting published

By Deborah Charles

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said on Sunday that Edward Snowden made sure that the information he took about U.S. surveillance programs will continue to be published regardless of what happens to the former U.S. spy agency contractor.

Assange criticized the United States for revoking Snowden's passport and said it would not stop the classified information taken by the 30-year-old former contractor from getting out.

"Look, there is no stopping the publishing process at this stage," Assange said in an interview with ABC's "This Week" television show. "Great care has been taken to make sure that Mr. Snowden can't be pressured by any state to stop the publication process."

He did not directly respond when asked if WikiLeaks was in possession of the files.

Last week, Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian journalist who first published the classified information released by Snowden, said Snowden had made encrypted copies of his files and distributed them in case anything happened to him.

Greenwald told The Daily Beast that the people in possession of these files "cannot access them yet because they are highly encrypted and they do not have the passwords." But Greenwald said "if anything happens at all to Edward Snowden, he told me he has arranged for them to get access to the full archives."

Snowden left his job as an NSA contractor in Hawaii last month and went to Hong Kong before Britain's Guardian newspaper and the Washington Post published articles based on top-secret documents he took from the government that detailed U.S. surveillance programs.

After hiding in Hong Kong he fled Moscow, where he remains in hiding at the Sheremetyevo airport. The U.S. government has charged Snowden under the 1917 Espionage Act with theft and passing classified communications to an "unauthorized person."

Snowden is currently stuck in legal limbo in a transit area of the Moscow airport. Assange has said Snowden, who has sought legal advice from WikiLeaks, has requested asylum in Ecuador. But Snowden's passport was revoked by Washington and an Ecuadorean travel document he used to travel to Russia from Hong Kong has been declared invalid by Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa.

Correa told Reuters in Ecuador on Sunday that Snowden's fate is in the hands of Russian authorities. He said Quito cannot begin considering asylum for Snowden until he reaches Ecuador or an Ecuadorean embassy.

Assange sought asylum from Ecuador last year and is living in Ecuador's London embassy to avoid being extradited to Sweden, which wants to question him about allegations of sexual assault and rape.

Assange said the United States had "marooned" Snowden in Russia by revoking his passport.

"Is that really a great outcome by the State Department?" Assange asked, saying that Washington had put Snowden through a "meat grinder" although "Mr. Snowden has not been convicted of anything."

In a separate interview, President Barack Obama's national security adviser, Tom Donilon, said since Snowden was not traveling on valid papers he should be returned to the United States "because he's wanted here for a crime."

Donilon said Washington had been in discussions with the Russian government through law enforcement channels on a regular basis about Snowden.

"And I have to agree with (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin, which - when he said the other day that it would be better for Mr. Snowden to decide where - when he's leaving ... sooner rather than later," Donilon said on CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS." The 'Internet of Things' pits?George Jetson vs. George Orwell

Red Tape Chronicles

Kim Kyung Hoon / Reuters file

A model in Tokyo poses in an LED dress designed by Swarovski and Hussein Chalayan. One day soon, electronic clothing like this will even be connected to the Internet.

Doors that magically unlock as you approach. Clothes that advise you when they're out of style, then tell your car how to get to the nearest sale. Cough medicine that tells you when it's time to go to the doctor. This magical, futuristic world now called the "Internet of Things" is coming straight from science fiction into your home. Like "the cloud," the "Internet of Things" is largely a marketing term designed to create buzz around a series of not-yet-ready-for-prime time technologies, and also like the cloud, you won't be able to avoid hearing about it soon.

But this time, the stakes are much higher. It?s a full-on cage match between George Jetson and George Orwell.

Maybe it's a miracle to think about high-tech insulin pumps that patients never need to touch, while doctors control them from thousands of miles away. But what happens when a hacker hijacks that insulin pump ? or simply threatens to hijack it, and messages the patient that he'd better pay a ransom to keep it functioning properly? Those runaway gadgets from "The Jetsons" cartoon might not be such a laughing matter in real life.

We already have an Internet of Things ? your PC, laptop, tablet, everything already connected to the Internet. What the "IoT" crowd means by "things" is "everything." They want to attach tiny computers and sensors to just about every object in the world, and make them all talk to each other.

"We have everyday objects we've been interacting with for years, and many of these objects are now gaining intelligence and connectivity," said Jason Johnson, leader of the IoT consortium. "We will create this fabric of connected devices."

The back story
The idea of putting little connected computers everywhere, even floating in the air around us, isn't new. You'll find popular references to "ubiquitous computing" nearly 20 years ago. Since then, there has been one failed effort after another to bring James Bond-like automation to our lives. Take the hobbyist X-10 technology, which let users turn off household lights via remote control ? X-10 gadgets had trouble competing with The Clapper, much less "The Jetsons."

Today, continually shrinking sensors and processors put us on the threshold of the Internet of Things. In fact, some of this futuristic wizardry already has a devoted following. Members of the burgeoning Quantified Self movement use iPhones and wearable sensors like Fitbit to measure their heart rate, blood pressure and sleep patterns, upload that data into spreadsheets, sometimes even share it automatically via Twitter and Facebook. They use the data to find the optimal temperature to go for a run, or the best humidity conditions in which to sleep.

Fitbit system combines wireless trackers, a Wi-Fi smart scale, smartphone apps

Fitbit

The Fitbit system combines wireless trackers, a Wi-Fi smart scale, smartphone apps and cloud-based information management to help people keep in shape.

Advanced medicine also already employs many of these technologies. For instance, probes with cameras work their way through our circulatory systems into our hearts, sending back detailed pictures to doctors who can make repairs in minutes in situations that would previously proved fatal.

When that kind of technology inevitably gets cheap ? when our pens, cars, toilets and everything else can see and hear us ? many exciting notions become possible. You might never run out of toilet paper, for example. At the same time, you might share uncomfortably up-to-date health information with your doctor.

What could go wrong?
But anyone who's every suffered a dropped phone call, gotten bad directions from a GPS, or even had a printer jam will realize that technology lets us down as often as it lifts us up. So aren't we setting ourselves up for gadget failure hell?

No, says Johnson, for two reasons. First, stepping on the shoulders of other futuristic failures, Internet of Things entrepreneurs know they have to prioritize substance over glitz. And second, the gadgets they sell must have an old-fashioned backup system.

"You must solve a real problem for people," he said. "We have to make sure our products and services aren't just gizmos that will shortly outgrow the gee-whiz factor. We have to have a positive impact on people's lives, making them simpler and more relaxed."

One such gadget, Johnson hopes, is the August Smart Lock ? making it is his day job. The front door lock recognizes who is approaching your home and lets you open the door on command. No need to give the dog walker a spare key; Smart Lock users can grant access to certain people at certain times, even during emergencies.

"It lets you rethink what it means to give access to your home," he said.

Smart Lock has a second important feature: If the power goes out, the homeowner can use an old-fashioned key to get in. For the Internet of Things to work, there must be a plan B when it doesn't work, Johnson says. Anyone stuck in a car with a dead battery and electric windows can appreciate that.

 August Smart Lock installation diagram

August

The August Smart Lock, which installs over a standard deadbolt, lets you unlock your door over the Internet.

Big Brother
Potentially comical failures ? what if your toilet paper sensor battery goes dead? ? are not the biggest potential obstacle for the Internet of Things, however.

The NSA is.

If you are even the slightest bit worried about the federal government reading your email, how concerned will you be that it could create a database of every bowel movement? Far fetched? Imagine what the National Institute of Health could do with such data.

Every one of these computer things will collect data that could end up in the hands of law enforcement, marketing companies, or even hackers, and at the moment, there is little to stop that. This worries Kevin Mahaffey, who runs mobile security company Lookout Inc.

"There are two possible ways this works. A world where everything you do is surveilled, and everything is potentially hacked by someone,? Mahaffey said. "But the alternative way is a world where you as an individual can control this data. And that's a pretty exciting world, a world where you can have the benefit of the technology, but not some Orwellian dystopia, where even in your own home you aren?t safe from the Internet-connected pen."

One privacy nightmare ? the reselling of bathroom data to drug companies, an insulin pump hacker attack, or a law enforcement incident involving home automation or monitoring ? could derail the Internet of Things for years, Mahaffey warns.

Johnson acknowledges this, but he believes companies in his space can rise to the challenge of balancing convenience with privacy.

?All the Internet of Things companies, we're capturing a lot of data about users,? Johnson said. Government regulations and industry policies should restrict usage of the data, but communication with consumers will also be key. ?We need to be very cognizant of the sensitivity of that data and how we make users aware of how this data can be used ? It's important they understand what?s going on.?

Four Vanderbilt football players dismissed

Four Vanderbilt University football players were dismissed from the team and suspended from the school as sex crime detectives look into an alleged incident in a dormitory, the college and police said Saturday.

The school and police declined to release further details about the team rule violations.

Vanderbilt University Police reported the incident to Nashville, Tennessee, police on Wednesday, authorities said. The school said it's cooperating with investigators.

The city's sex crime investigators are looking into "a matter that is alleged to have occurred at a Vanderbilt University dormitory," Nashville Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Don Aaron said Saturday.

The investigation is ongoing, Aaron said.

While on interim suspension from the school, the four players can't be on campus without explicit permission from the school's office of student conduct and academic integrity, the university said.

"The well-being of our students is of paramount concern to us, and we will not tolerate any actions that threaten student safety and security," Vanderbilt vice chancellor for public affairs Beth Fortune said in a statement.

Last season, Vanderbilt finished 9-4 for its best record since 1915 when it was 9-1. The team won the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl, beating North Carolina State 38-24.

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) ? An Ecuadorean diplomatic employee issued a safe conduct pass for National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden to travel to Ecuador to seek political asylum, but the action was unauthorized and the pass has no validity, government officials said Thursday.

Ecuador's scramble to explain the document, revealed by the Univision television network, came as President Obama was seeking to downplay the international chase for "a 29-year-old hacker" and lower the temperature of an issue that has already raised tensions between the U.S. and uneasy partners Russia and China.

Obama said in Senegal that the damage to U.S. national security has already been done and his top focus now is making sure it can't happen again.

Ecuadorean officials have repeatedly expressed sympathy for Snowden for revealing secret global U.S. surveillance programs, but have insisted they have taken no decision on granting him asylum, and they rushed to distance themselves from the unsigned letter shown by Univision.

Secretary of Political Management Betty Tola told a news conference that "any document of this type has no validity and is the exclusive responsibility of the person who issued it."

Another government official said that while the document is authentic, it was issued without approval from the Foreign Ministry or other officials in the capital and thus has no legal power. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

Tola told reporters that Snowden's asylum application hadn't been processed because he was not in Ecuador as required by law. She also threatened legal action against whoever had leaked the document. She and other officials offered no further details about his case.

The back-and-forth over the document appears to be part of broader debate within Ecuador's leftist government about whether to offer asylum to Snowden, who is believed to remain in limbo in the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport after flying in from Hong Kong.

Snowden's American passport has been revoked by U.S. authorities. Ecuadoran officials have defended Snowden in public, saying his revelations of U.S. spying benefited the world, but also seem taken aback by the intensity of global attention and U.S. criticism focused on Ecuador for considering his asylum request.

Communications Minister Fernando Alvarado reacted defiantly on Thursday, saying the country rejects economic "blackmail" to force its hand. He said "Ecuador unilaterally and irrevocably renounces" tariff benefits on hundreds of millions of dollars in trade that are up for renewal by the U.S. Congress. Nearly half of Ecuador's foreign trade depends on the U.S.

The program, initially meant to help Andean countries aiding in the fight against drugs, was facing an uphill fight for renewal. Alvarado did not explicitly mention a separate effort to win trade benefits under a presidential order.

On Wednesday, Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, promised to lead an effort to block extension of the tariff benefits aid if Ecuador grants asylum to Snowden.

In Senegal, President Barack Obama said Thursday that The United States won't be scrambling military jets or engaging in high-level diplomatic bartering to get Snowden extradited to the U.S.

"I'm not going to have one case with a suspect who we're trying to extradite suddenly be elevated to the point where I've got to start doing wheeling and dealing and trading on a whole host of other issues, simply to get a guy extradited so he can face the justice system," Obama said at a joint news conference with Senegal's President Macky Sall.

Snowden's intercontinental efforts to evade U.S. authorities ? taking him from a hotel hideout in Hong Kong to an airport transit zone in Moscow, where he's believed to be holed up ? has already undercut Obama's efforts to strengthen ties with China and threatened to worsen tensions with Russia just as Obama is seeking Moscow's cooperation on Syria. At the same time, Snowden's attempts to seek asylum from Ecuador and other nations have underscored Obama's limited sway in a number of foreign capitals.

Obama's comment came on the first full day of a weeklong, 3-country trip to Africa, his first major tour of sub-Saharan Africa since he took office more than four years ago.

WearIT brings its prototype smart watch to CE Week, we go eyes-on

WearIT brings its prototype smart watch to CE Week, we go eyeson

It'd be hard to go hands-on with the WearIT smart watch given that it's still very much a prototype and its touchscreen is ... well, it's not enabled yet. But we did get a chance to put our hands to the device and snap a gaggle of pictures, highlighting its 1.54-inch capacitive touchscreen and trio of buttons (each of which will correspond to specific applications, we're told). The concept with WearIT's watch is that it's a standalone device -- "We're getting closer to Dick Tracy every day," a company rep told us. While the device isn't quite up to Tracy's standards (no phone functionality, for instance), it assuredly packs more power than the aging detective's wrist gadget.

A Cortex A8 600 MHz CPU and 256MB of RAM are at the heart of the smart watch, backed up by a 550 mAh lithium ion rechargeable battery. 4GB of storage is embedded inside, along with 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth / Bluetooth LE, ANT+, and a USB 2.0 port (when using the charging clip, included with the watch). Oh, and it runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, though it's pared down considerably for the screen size. We'll have a much closer look at WearIT's smart watch later this year -- the device is expected to arrive in the US starting in November and will retail for $400.

CloudSpotter (for iPhone)

CloudSpotter (for iPhone) takes a refreshingly literal approach to the concept of "cloud-based app:" it's all about "analog" clouds of the fluffy, wispy, rainy, or iridescent ilk. This citizen science app is a fun, educational, and challenging tool to help you identify, understand, and appreciate the wide variety of clouds that float above our world.

The app's concept is simple: it lets you photograph clouds in the sky, identify them with the aid of the app's "cloud library" or its step-by-step identifier, upload them to your collection of cloud photos, and wait for the app's volunteer staff to verify (or nix) your identifications. You earn stars and badges for cloud identifications (and can compete with other cloud spotters in doing so), and occasionally get your images displayed in the app's gallery for others to see. You might even help a new cloud type gain official recognition.

CloudSpotter, optimized for the iPhone 5, is compatible with iPhones starting with the 3GS, iPads, and iPods touch, provided that they run iOS 6.0. I tested it on an iPhone 5, as its camera is better than that of my iPad 2, the phone is far easier to point up at the sky and snap a picture, and it's generally connected to the Internet when I'm outside. I tried accessing the app with my iPad; as content is scaled for the iPhone, the text suffers some degradation when enlarged to iPad size, though photos were easier to see on the large screen.

The War on Blue-Sky Thinking
CloudSpotter is the brainchild of the Cloud Appreciation Society, an organization founded in 2005 to foster understanding and appreciation of clouds. The society's website lets its 32,000 members share their cloud-related observations, questions, and photos. From the society's manifesto: "We believe that clouds are unjustly maligned and that life would be immeasurably poorer without them?.We pledge to fight 'blue-sky thinking' wherever we find it. Life would be dull if we had to look up at cloudless monotony day after day."

The first time you open the app, you're treated to a short, informative, and unabashedly cutesy (as in clouds and raindrops with faces) video showing how clouds form out of water vapor and eventually return it as rain. The app is suitable for anyone with a desire to learn about clouds, and for the most part the text is more descriptive than technical.

CloudSpotter Basics
CloudSpotter works only in portrait mode. At the top of the screen is a headline letting you know what section you're in. Most of the screen area displays content, which varies depending on which section you're in, and along the bottom are five tabs, one for each section. The first tab is the Cloud Library, which depicts 40 different cloud types, split into 3 sections: "The Ten Main Cloud Types" (cumulus, stratus, nimbostratus, cirrus, etc.); Other Cloud Types (everything from contrails and fog to tuba (funnel cloud) and some exotic varieties (that can earn you 5 stars for spotting) including noctilucent, Kelvin-Helmholtz?which looks like the crests of ocean waves?and the dark and dramatic-looking asperatus.

Each cloud type is depicted with a thumbnail, crossed by a blue ribbon showing the number of stars (from 1 to 5) that collecting it is worth. Clicking on the thumbnail enlarges the image and lets you scroll through up to about 7 additional images. It also provides descriptive text; identifies the cloud type's altitude (high, mid, low, ground, multiple, or varied); whether or not it's associated with precipitation; cloud types that can be mistaken for it; and cloud types often seen in conjunction with it.

The descriptive text is written for a general audience, providing details of the cloud's appearance, characteristics, and formation. It escapes being dry by maintaining a light, conversational tone: "If you've never spotted a Cumulus cloud, then you ought to get out more."

In Search of Unknown Clouds
Back to asperatus: it is not officially recognized as a cloud variety, but cloud spotters are looking to change that. There hasn't been a new addition to the International Cloud Atlas, published by the World Meteorological Organization, since Cirrus inoculus was added in 1951, but in 2009 the founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society proposed that asperatus (whose name is Latin for rough, because of its resemblance to a rough, turbulent sea) be considered as a new cloud variety. The idea has gained the support of some meteorologists, including Great Britain's Royal Meteorological Society.

To gain official recognition from the World Meteorological Organization, however, requires understanding of the cloud's characteristics as well as the conditions under which it forms, and cloud spotters worldwide have contributed images and videos of asperatus to that end. By photographing this rare phenomenon, users of the CloudSpotter app can not only earn 5 stars and a badge, they're participating in useful research that could lead to the official recognition of a whole new variety of cloud.

Observations from CloudSpotter users will also be put to good scientific use in helping to calibrate NASA's Ceres (Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System) instruments on three climate satellites that measure the amount of sunlight that is reflected back into space from the Earth. This information is used to calculate the surface temperature, but the amount and type of cloud cover?some of which, clouds over snow for instance, can be hard to discern from space?also affects the temperature. By using a worldwide database of sightings of different types of clouds from the app, scientists should be able to reduce errors in their temperature observations, and better understand the complex and crucial role that clouds play in regulating global temperatures.

Wall Street advances on central bank comments, data

By Chuck Mikolajczak

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks advanced on Tuesday, putting the S&P 500 on track to stem recent losses after comments from central bankers in the U.S. and China eased recent concerns about a credit crunch and an end to stimulus measures.

The People's Bank of China said it would not press banks too greatly in its efforts to curb easy credit as it sought to ease worries of a possible banking crisis.

The S&P 500 <.spx> on Monday closed at its lowest level since April 22 after China's central bank said the country's banks need to do a better job of managing their cash and due to continued worries about a reduction in stimulus measures from the Federal Reserve.

But equities pared losses late in the session after two Fed officials downplayed the notion of an imminent end to monetary stimulus. The benchmark S&P index has fallen 4.8 percent since the Fed signaled last week that it may begin to lessen stimulus should its economic forecasts hold true, including a 1.4 percent drop the day of the announcement.

"Today everything seems to be calmed down - you've got every Fed President going out at every opportunity trying to assure everyone that they have overreacted," said Ken Polcari, Director of the NYSE floor division at O'Neil Securities in New York.

Housing-related stocks advanced, buoyed by a flurry of data that showed continued momentum in the industry's recovery. The PHLX housing sector index <.hgx> climbed 2.1 percent.

Adding support was data showing durable goods orders increased 3.6 percent in May, above the 3 percent forecast, the latest signs of a pick-up in economic activity.

Data from the Conference Board showed consumer confidence jumped in June to 81.4, its highest level in over five years, and above expectations for a 75.4 reading.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> gained 67.85 points, or 0.46 percent, to 14,727.41. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> added 7.47 points, or 0.47 percent, to 1,580.56. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> rose 10.12 points, or 0.30 percent, to 3,330.88.

The S&P/Case Shiller composite index of house prices in 20 metropolitan areas gained 1.7 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis, topping forecasts for 1.2 percent, indicating the housing recovery continues to gain momentum.

New home sales data increased 2.1 percent in May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 476,000 units, the highest since July 2008.

Lennar Corp climbed 3.3 percent to $36.13 after the No. 3 U.S. homebuilder reported a 53 percent jump in quarterly revenue as it sold more homes at higher prices, and said orders rose 27 percent.

Walgreen Co slumped 6 percent to $45.17 as the worst performer on the S&P 500 after reporting weaker-than-expected results, citing slow front-end sales and a challenging economy.

Barnes & Noble Inc tumbled 13.3 percent to $16.32 after the largest U.S. bookstore chain reported its quarterly net loss more than doubled.
