Catholic Hospital Under Fire for Arguing That Fetuses Aren't People

Under Colorado law, a fetus is not a person, but Catholic leaders say that's no excuse for one of their hospitals to use that argument to win a legal battle. The debate comes from a lawsuit filed by a man whose wife and unborn twins died at St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City, Colorado. She was seven months preagent at the time and the lawsuit alleges that the hospital was liable for wrongful death because they failed to perform a Cesarean section to save the twins. The case is currently being appealed to the State Supreme Court

RELATED: Abortion Clinic 'House of Horrors' Sparks Debate

In earlier trials, the hospital's lawyers have argued they aren't liable for the death of the twins, because Colorado law states that a fetus is not a person. And legally, they've been vindicated. Two lower courts ruled in their favor. However, many abortion rights advocates have noted the?hypocrisy?of a staunchly pro-life organization?changing its attitude when it's economically?convenient.?

RELATED: Siri Has a Funny Way of Not Knowing Things

More importantly, Catholics have noticed as well, and many are outraged that the hospital would defy Church teachings simply to win a legal battle. William Donahoe of the Catholic League lashed out at the?hospital?on CNN this morning, saying they should be stripped of their Catholic status and that anyone who defies the "natural law" of the Church just to save money is a "harlot." Local bishops have?promised?to review the case, with the Archbishop of Denver saying in a statement that, "No Catholic institution may legitimately work to undermine fundamental human dignity." When other Catholic hospitals are attacked for refusing to perform abortions, and others for refusing to save a fetus, there's simply no side of this issue that won't bring anger down on the Church.

I join all those marching for life from afar, and pray that political leaders will protect the unborn and promote a culture of life.

Parasites of Madagascar's lemurs expanding with climate change

Thursday, January 24, 2013

Rising temperatures and shifting rainfall patterns in Madagascar could fuel the spread of lemur parasites and the diseases they carry.

By combining data on six parasite species from ongoing surveys of lemur health with weather data and other environmental information for Madagascar as a whole, a team of Duke University researchers has created probability maps of likely parasite distributions throughout the island today.

Then, using climate projections for the year 2080, they estimate what parasite distributions might look like in the future.

"We can use these models to figure out where the risk of lemur-human disease transmission might be highest, and use that to better protect the future of lemur and human health," said lead author Meredith Barrett, who conducted the study while working as a graduate student at Duke.

Lemurs are native to the African island of Madagascar, where climate change isn't the only threat to their survival. More than 90 percent of the lemurs' forest habitat has already been cleared for logging, farming and grazing. Illegal hunting for bushmeat is also a problem.

A key part of saving these animals is ensuring that they stay healthy as environmental conditions in their island home continue to shift, Barrett said.

Average annual temperatures in Madagascar are predicted to rise by 1.1 to 2.6 degrees Celsius by 2080. Rainfall, drought and cyclone patterns are changing too.

In a study published in the January 2013 issue of the journal Biological Conservation, Barrett and colleagues examined what these changes could mean for lemur health by taking a cue from the parasites they carry.

The team focused on six species of mites, ticks and intestinal worms commonly known to infect lemurs. The parasites are identified in lemur fur and feces. Some species -- such as pinworms, whipworms and tapeworms -- cause diarrhea, dehydration and weight loss in human hosts. Others, particularly mites and ticks, can transmit diseases such as plague, typhus or scabies.

When the researchers compared their present-day maps with parasite distributions predicted for the future, they found that lemur parasites could expand their range by as much as 60 percent. Whipworms, for example, which are now largely confined to Madagascar's northeast and western coasts, may become widely distributed on the country's southeastern coast as well.

Anne Yoder, senior author on the study and Director of the Duke Lemur Center, said the research is particularly important now as lemurs have been identified by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as the most endangered mammals on earth.

Warmer weather means that parasites could grow and reproduce more quickly, or spread to higher latitudes and elevations where once they were unable to survive. As lemur parasites become more prevalent, the diseases they carry could show up in new places. The spread could be harmful to lemur populations that have never encountered these pests before, and lack resistance to the diseases they carry.

Shifting parasite distributions could have ripple effects on people too. As human population growth in Madagascar drives people and their livestock into previously uninhabited areas, wildlife-human disease transmission becomes increasingly likely.

The authors hope their results will help researchers predict where disease hotspots are likely to occur, and prepare for them before they hit.

Meredith Barrett is now a postdoctoral scholar with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholars Program at the University of California at San Francisco and Berkeley. Jason Brown of Duke University and Randall Junge of the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium were also authors of this study.

Recipe for vegetarian steamed dumplings with sweet-and-sour sauce

Whether or not Chinese New Year marks a major event in your life, it?s easy to love many of the foods associated with it.

Dumplings are a traditional choice for the holiday, which this year begins Feb. 10. And while there are seemingly endless variations on the simple theme of stuffing rounds of dough with something savory and delicious, the basic steamed dumpling is among my favourites. Not the least because it is incredibly weeknight friendly.

I always start by using purchased wonton skins as the dough. These skins, which are available in various shapes and sizes, are widely available, inexpensive, need no prep, cook quickly and are easy to work with.

For the filling, you can use virtually anything you like. Seasoned ground meats (pork, poultry or even beef all work quite nicely) are wonderful, especially when combined with diced vegetables, such as carrots and onion. The only trick is to make certain the ingredients aren?t watery, as this will ruin the texture of the dumplings.

If your filling contains many vegetables, it?s a good idea to give them a quick stir-fry before adding them to the mixture. This helps remove excess water. For smaller amounts of vegetables, this isn?t necessary. You?ll also want to opt for lean ground meats for the same reason.

For this dumpling recipe, I decided to go vegetarian and used purchased seasoned and baked tofu in the filling. If you?d rather use meat, substitute an equal amount of diced or ground meat and skip the food processing step. You?ll also need to steam for a bit longer (use an instant thermometer to check the progress and ensure you hit a safe cooking temperature).

For this recipe, I use a simple fold-and-pinch method of forming the dumplings. It requires no special equipment or skill. But if you make a lot of dumplings, consider getting a dumpling press sold for just a few dollars at Asian markets. These clamshell-style presses neatly fold and crimp the dumplings into attractive packets.

VEGETARIAN STEAMED DUMPLINGS WITH SWEET-AND-SOUR SAUCE

Seasoned baked tofu is sold with the other refrigerated Asian items, usually in the grocer?s produce section.

Start to finish: 45 minutes

Makes 48 dumplings

For the dumplings:

12 ounces seasoned baked tofu, cut into cubes

6 scallions, ends trimmed

2 cloves garlic

1/4 cup fresh cilantro, leaves and stems

1/2 cup finely grated carrots

1 whole egg or 2 egg whites, beaten

2 tablespoons hoisin sauce

2 tablespoons soy sauce

1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil

1 teaspoon hot sauce

12-ounce package 3-inch square wonton wrappers

For the sweet-and-sour sauce:

1/2 cup rice vinegar (cider vinegar can be substituted)

2/3 cup packed brown sugar

2 tablespoons apricot jam

2 tablespoons ketchup

2 teaspoons soy sauce

1 teaspoon hot sauce

1 tablespoon cornstarch

2 tablespoons water

In a food processor, combine the tofu, scallions, garlic, cilantro, carrots, egg, hoisin, soy sauce, sesame oil and hot sauce. Pulse until the tofu is finely chopped, but not ground, about ten 1-second pulses.

One at a time, place 1 teaspoon of the mixture in the centre of each wonton wrapper. Dunk your fingers in water, then use them to wet the edges of the wrapper. Gather the edges of the wrapper over the filling, pinching them together to form a small bundle. Repeat with the remaining filling and wrappers.

In a large saute pan, bring about 1 inch of water to a boil. Set a bamboo or other steamer basket over the water, then lightly coat it with cooking spray.

Working in batches if necessary, arrange the dumplings in the steamer (they should not touch), then cover and steam for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, prepare the sweet-and-sour sauce. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the vinegar, brown sugar, jam, ketchup, soy sauce and hot sauce. Bring to a simmer. In a small glass, mix the cornstarch and water, then add to the saucepan. Simmer for another 2 minutes, or until slightly thickened.

Serve the dumplings with sweet-and-sour sauce on the side for dipping.

7 incredible foods to improve your eyesight ~ Naiya's Recipes ...

Article By : Adam. In order to maintain eye health and vision, ocular nutrition are essential. This is because each and every individual part of the eye- the macula, cornea, pupil, iris, retina, lens, optic nerve etc- needs to be healthy in order to perform optimally. Over time, however, there are many things that inevitably go wrong with our vision. Various factors such as physical injury, dust, automobile fumes, ultraviolet rays, long hours in front of a computer screen etc. can contribute to vision problems.
The good news is that you can improve your eyesight naturally without having to undergo expensive medical procedures. All your ocular nutritional needs can be met by consuming a balanced diet that contains foods that are invaluable to proper eye vision. In addition, some of these foods also help to ward off eye-related diseases. Much as eye problems are attributed to genetic factors or aging, you can give your eyes a better chance of fighting off eye-related complications by choosing wisely what you eat. Here in below, we take a look at 7 foods to improve eyesight as follows-

Carrots
?Arguably one of the most common foods associated with improved eyesight, carrots are vital to healthy eyes as they contain beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene. Beta-carotene is good for the retina as it protects the eyes from damage occasioned by the sun, whilst lycopene is an anti-oxidant that protects the eyes from Ultra-Violet radiation. Further, lutein which is highly concentrated in the macula protects the eyes against damage by free radicals.

Eggs
Whatever way you choose to have them, eggs are essential to eye health. They contain two anti-oxidants-cysteine and sulphur- which prevent oxidative damage to the lens. Egg yolks are also rich in lutein which guards against age-related macular degeneration. Overall, the B-vitamins, zinc and essential fatty acids contained in eggs make them a must-have in your diet if you wish to improve your sight.

Apricots
Rich in both lycopene and beta-carotene, apricots foster eye health in a manner similar to carrots. Beta-carotene is converted to vitamin A in the body that in turn checks against oxidative damage to the lens and the development of cataracts. Apricots also contain carotenoids that are essential in eyesight improvement.

Dark grapes and berries
Grapes and various types of berries contain eye nourishing nutrients referred to as anthocyanins which greatly improve night vision. Alternately, blueberries contain flavanoids and minerals such as selenium and zinc that not only prevent macular degeneration, but foster proper vision as well.

Dark green leafy vegetables
The benefits of green leafy vegetables in any diet cannot be overstated and it is little wonder that they are also beneficial to eye health. The high levels of anti-oxidants present in them ensure that regular consumption reduces age-related eyesight problems and cataracts.

Fruits rich in vitamin C
Citrus fruits including other vitamin C rich fruits such as tomatoes play a vital role in guarding not just against infection, but degenerative eye conditions. The latter also contains lycopene and lutein whose anti-oxidant properties ensure that the eyes are well protected from damage by the Sun.

Dark chocolate
Rich in flavanoids, regular consumption of dark chocolate will ultimately improve your eyesight. The flavanoids present strengthen the cornea by protecting the eye's blood vessels. For maximum benefits, indulge in chocolate that contains at least 60% cocoa extracts.

China stocks have very big day, up 3.1%

Pdf Tuesday, January 15, 2013

The Shanghai Composite Index rose 3.1 per cent, and the Shenzhen Composite 3.6 per cent, led by financial and property shares.

The reason?? A report surfaced that the roll-out of a pilot property tax might be delayed.

Chinese shares listed in Hong Kong, which have been climbing ahead of the mainland markets in recent months, were up 1.3 per cent.

The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index is at its highest level for a year, whereas the most important mainland index, the Shanghai Composite, is still down on the last 12 months, despite its recent sharp recovery.

International investors, buoyed by the improvement in global sentiment, are driving the market up faster than mainland Chinese investors, who are more focused on domestic issues, including policy announcements.

Scientists mimic fireflies to make brighter LEDs: New bio-inspired coating that increases LED efficiency by 55 percent

Jan. 8, 2013 ? The nighttime twinkling of fireflies has inspired scientists to modify a light-emitting diode (LED) so it is more than one and a half times as efficient as the original.

Researchers from Belgium, France, and Canada studied the internal structure of firefly lanterns, the organs on the bioluminescent insects' abdomens that flash to attract mates. The scientists identified an unexpected pattern of jagged scales that enhanced the lanterns' glow, and applied that knowledge to LED design to create an LED overlayer that mimicked the natural structure. The overlayer, which increased LED light extraction by up to 55 percent, could be easily tailored to existing diode designs to help humans light up the night while using less energy.

The work is published in a pair of papers today in the Optical Society's (OSA) open-access journal Optics Express.

"The most important aspect of this work is that it shows how much we can learn by carefully observing nature," says Annick Bay, a Ph.D. student at the University of Namur in Belgium who studies natural photonic structures, including beetle scales and butterfly wings. When her advisor, Jean Pol Vigneron, visited Central America to conduct field work on the Panamanian tortoise beetle (Charidotella egregia), he also noticed clouds of twinkling fireflies and brought some specimens back to the lab to examine in more detail.

Fireflies create light through a chemical reaction that takes place in specialized cells called photocytes. The light is emitted through a part of the insect's exoskeleton called the cuticle. Light travels through the cuticle more slowly than it travels through air, and the mismatch means a proportion of the light is reflected back into the lantern, dimming the glow. The unique surface geometry of some fireflies' cuticles, however, can help minimize internal reflections, meaning more light escapes to reach the eyes of potential firefly suitors.

In Optics Express papers, Bay, Vigneron, and colleagues first describe the intricate structures they saw when they examined firefly lanterns and then present how the same features could enhance LED design. Using scanning electron microscopes, the researchers identified structures such as nanoscale ribs and larger, misfit scales, on the fireflies' cuticles. When the researchers used computer simulations to model how the structures affected light transmission they found that the sharp edges of the jagged, misfit scales let out the most light. The finding was confirmed experimentally when the researchers observed the edges glowing the brightest when the cuticle was illuminated from below.

"We refer to the edge structures as having a factory roof shape," says Bay. "The tips of the scales protrude and have a tilted slope, like a factory roof." The protrusions repeat approximately every 10 micrometers, with a height of approximately 3 micrometers. "In the beginning we thought smaller nanoscale structures would be most important, but surprisingly in the end we found the structure that was the most effective in improving light extraction was this big-scale structure," says Bay.

Human-made light-emitting devices like LEDs face the same internal reflection problems as fireflies' lanterns and Bay and her colleagues thought a factory roof-shaped coating could make LEDs brighter. In the second Optics Express paper published today, which is included in the Energy Express section of the journal, the researchers describe the method they used to create a jagged overlayer on top of a standard gallium nitride LED. Nicolas Andr?, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Sherbrooke in Canada, deposited a layer of light-sensitive material on top of the LEDs and then exposed sections with a laser to create the triangular factory-roof profile. Since the LEDs were made from a material that slowed light even more than the fireflies' cuticle, the scientists adjusted the dimensions of the protrusions to a height and width of 5 micrometers to maximize the light extraction.

"What's nice about our technique is that it's an easy process and we don't have to create new LEDs," says Bay. "With a few more steps we can coat and laser pattern an existing LED."

Other research groups have studied the photonic structures in firefly lanterns as well, and have even mimicked some of the structures to enhance light extraction in LEDs, but their work focused on nanoscale features. The Belgium-led team is the first to identify micrometer-scale photonic features, which are larger than the wavelength of visible light, but which surprisingly improved light extraction better than the smaller nanoscale features. The factory roof coating that the researchers tested increased light extraction by more than 50 percent, a significantly higher percentage than other biomimicry approaches have achieved to date. The researchers speculate that, with achievable modifications to current manufacturing techniques, it should be possible to apply these novel design enhancements to current LED production within the next few years.

The firefly specimens that served as the inspiration for the effective new LED coating came from the genus Photuris, which is commonly found in Latin America and the United States. Bay says she has also examined the lanterns of a particularly hardy species of firefly found on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe that did not have the factory roof structure on the outer layer. She notes that she and her colleagues will continue to explore the great diversity of the natural world, searching for new sources of knowledge and inspiration. "The Photuris fireflies are very effective light emitters, but I am quite sure that there are other species that are even more effective," says Bay. "This work is not over."

I Wish I Thought of That! Organization Tips for the Home | Gale ...

Getting organized in your home can be less expensive and easier than you think. There are items all around your home that can help you get the clutter in order. Here are just a few tips to get you off to a good start:

A big problem is spices, they get lost in the cabinet, take up tons of room and are always hard to see. If this is a problem in your home use a?mop holder to store spices on the inside of a cabinet door.

Too many craft supplies and a place to put them is a typical problem. Arrange crayons, colored pencils and more in an over-the-door shoe organizer. You have all your supplies organized and easy to see in no time.

Use the shoe organizer for anything. It can also be great for cleaning supplies.

If you need decorations for your playroom walls and you have too many board games this is a great solution. Take the glass out of frames and frame the board games and hang on the walls. Attach the game pieces in little baggies to the frame.

What about all that jewelry? If you could actually see it you may even wear it more. Hang a peg board on the wall in your closet and hang your necklaces from it.

Need a place to put your earrings? How about an ice cube tray?

These are just a few nifty ideas. What are your best ideas to keep your home organized?

Wild Card Playoffs - Seattle Seahawks v Washington RedskinsGetty Images

We?d never seen this before, a playoff Sunday with three rookie quarterbacks starting, and if you were hoping for one of them to put up spectacular passing numbers, you turned off your TV feeling disappointed. But one of those three rookie quarterbacks, Seattle?s Russell Wilson, was anything but a disappointment.

It really is amazing, thinking back over the last year, to consider that Wilson now stands head and shoulders above the rest of this year?s fantastic class of rookie quarterbacks. Andrew Luck, the can?t-miss prospect drafted first overall by the Colts, had a phenomenal rookie season that came to an end with a tough loss to the Ravens. Robert Griffin III, the Heisman Trophy winner drafted second overall by the Redskins, hobbled around on a bad knee against the Seahawks until it buckled underneath him and he limped off the field, ending his own phenomenal rookie season.

But there?s Wilson, the allegedly too-short quarterback drafted 75th overall by the Seahawks, still alive heading into the divisional round, where he?ll lead the Seahawks against the Falcons next weekend. And Wilson was better than either of his fellow rookies on Sunday, completing 15 of 26 passes for 187 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions, and adding 67 rushing yards on eight carries.

Wilson was good all season, but he really arrived on Sunday. It?s not just that he?s got the arm and the feet to threaten any NFL defense, it?s the way he commands an offense and leads a football team. It?s the way he runs out in front to throw blocks to spring Marshawn Lynch for big gains. It?s the way he knows when to tuck the ball under his arm and take off running, and when to stay in the pocket and scan the field for an open receiver. It?s also the way he knows ? and this is important ? when to take a sack and when to throw the ball away when there are no plays to make, as he wisely did a few times on Sunday.

I don?t know how Wilson will compare to Luck and Griffin when we?ve had several years to compare their careers, but I do know this: Russell Wilson has arrived as a legitimate NFL star. Not bad for a rookie who was supposed to be too short.

Wilson was my favorite player on the field Sunday. Here are some other observations:

Line judge Mark Perlman made the call of the playoffs. Seahawks receiver Sidney Rice made a sensational 27-yard catch along the sideline in the second quarter, but the first official on the play ruled that Rice didn?t get his feet down inbounds. Perlman was the official who correctly came in and overruled his colleague, calling it a catch. The NFL uses all-star officiating crews during the playoffs, meaning these officials haven?t been working together all season, and sometimes postseason officiating is criticized because the officials don?t work well together as a unit. But Perlman did his job perfectly on that play.

We narrowly missed one of the all-time great playoff moments. When Colts quarterback Andrew Luck had a pass deflected at the line of scrimmage in the second quarter, it bounced right into the arms of Ray Lewis, playing in Baltimore for the last time. It would have been an easy interception, and given how much daylight he had in front of him, Lewis might have taken it back for a touchdown. That would have been an amazing way for Lewis to go out in style in Baltimore, but unfortunately he dropped the pass. ?I?ll never live that down,? Lewis said after the game. Actually, everyone in Baltimore will gladly overlook it. But it would have been some great moment.

The Colts need to revamp their offensive line. It was amazing how often Luck would take the snap, drop back and have three Ravens in his face before he could set his feet in the pocket. The offensive line has been a major problem for the Colts all season, and it?s a testament to Luck?s toughness that he managed to stay healthy the entire year. Luck is going to be a great quarterback for a long time, but the Colts can?t let him get killed back there.

Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton had my favorite play of the day. With the Colts facing third-and-26 with 12 seconds left in the first half, Luck found Hilton open about 20 yards downfield. Luck?s throw was too high, but Hilton leapt up and caught it, then raced past three Ravens defenders (picking up a nice block from tight end Coby Fleener) to get the first down and then get out of bounds with three seconds left, setting up Adam Vinatieri?s 52-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

Who says fullbacks are dead? The fullback position isn?t used as often in NFL offenses as it once was, but all four teams that won this weekend got key plays from fullbacks. Seahawks fullback Michael Robinson and Ravens fullback Vontae Leach both scored touchdowns on Sunday. Packers fullback John Kuhn scored two touchdowns on Saturday. And Texans fullback James Casey had a 20-yard catch and also did an outstanding job as a lead blocker for Arian Foster in the weekend?s first playoff game.

Reggie Wayne is building his Hall of Fame resume. It should come as a surprise to no one that the NFL record for all-time postseason catches is owned by Jerry Rice. But I bet a lot of people will be surprised to learn that Colts receiver Reggie Wayne is No. 2. Rice had 151 catches in his 29 career playoff games, a record that may never be broken. But on Sunday Wayne played his 18th career postseason game, and his nine catches against the Ravens moved him ahead of Michael Irvin and Hines Ward, into second place on the all-time playoff receiving list, with 92.

The story of the day is the injury suffered by Robert Griffin III. A day that started with a report that the Redskins had disregarded medical advice to rush Griffin onto the field ended with Griffin exiting with a knee injury. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has to be regretting his decision to let Griffin play on a bad knee. Here?s hoping bad knees don?t slow Griffin?s progress. We should be seeing him square off with Wilson in the NFC playoffs for years to come.

Fed's Bullard: Central bank independence hurt by crisis response

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Central banks have sacrificed some of their cherished political independence by undertaking fiscal-like policies to help repair the damage of the global financial crisis, a senior official of the Federal Reserve said on Friday, as he called the ECB one of the worst offenders.

James Bullard, president of the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank, called the European Central Bank's bond-buying program a "fiscalization" of monetary policy, and said it had weakened the ECB's response to the European recession.

"Why? By nearly all accounts, the monetary policy process has been bogged down by political wrangling over the OMT and other programs," Bullard said in remarks prepared for delivery at the American Economic Association on central bank independence.

The OMT, or outright monetary transaction program, is the ECB's bond-buying program that allows for potentially unlimited interventions for ailing states.

The Fed has also been accused of straying into fiscal policy territory, which is supposed to be the exclusive preserve of elected politicians in the United States.

John Taylor, author of the influential Taylor Rule for central bankers, has been one of the most outspoken of these critics and sat on the panel with Bullard.

Basic math skills linked to PSAT math success

Jan. 4, 2013 ? New research from Western University provides brain imaging evidence that students well-versed in very basic single digit arithmetic (5+2=7 or 7-3=4) are better equipped to score higher on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT), an examination sat by millions of students in the United States each year in preparation for college admission tests.

In findings published January 4 in The Journal of Neuroscience research led by Daniel Ansari, Associate Professor in Western's Department of Psychology and a principal investigator at the Brain and Mind Institute, showed by utilizing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) on high school seniors that there was a significant link between their brain responses while solving extremely basic, single digit calculation problems and standard scores on the PSAT.

"The surprising thing here is that we found both a positive and negative relationship between brain activation during the very elementary, single digit arithmetic tasks and how well they did on the PSAT test, which measures advanced, high school level math skills," says Ansari, Canada Research Chair in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience.

Students that scored better on the PSAT math tests generated greater positive activation in a brain region in the left side of the brain, called the supramarginal gyrus, which is known to be linked to fact retrieval, while students that scored lower, produced more activity in an area in the right side of the brain, called the intraparietal sulcus, which is involved in quantity processing and more effortful problem solving.

"Essentially, this means that those high school students that don't do so well on the PSAT use more problem solving strategies when they are doing very elementary sums and subtractions," offers Ansari. "If you are a high school student and you are using brain circuits that we know are associated with fact retrieval and fluency, we see evidence that you are also going to score better on the math portion of the college admission test. There is a clear link between fluency and high level abilities -- being fluent at basic math counts."

This new knowledge is important from a math education perspective, concludes Ansari, because traditionally, debate rages between the "drill and kill" style approach versus more conceptual, problem-solving based pedagogy, but it is now clear that both methods are important in elementary education. These findings suggest that the way in which the brain is organized for single digit arithmetic calculation predicts performance on more complex math skills, illustrating the critical role that arithmetic fluency plays in building mathematical proficiency among students.

Given that the evidence is correlational, future studies following children from early elementary school through to high school will be needed to shed light on the specific ways in which acquisition of basic arithmetic fluency influences the learning of the kinds of skills tested by the PSAT.

Ansari teamed with former Western Postdoctoral Fellow Gavin Price, now an Assistant Professor in Educational Neuroscience at Vanderbilt University, and Dr. Michele Mazzocco from the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota on the study, which was supported by funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canada Research Chairs Program.

Private moon startup hires lander designer

The new moon travel startup Golden Spike has chosen its first contractor to design private lunar lander vehicles: veteran aerospace firm Northrop Grumman.

Northrop Grumman built the very first manned lunar landers back in the 1960s (when the company was called Grumman) for NASA's Apollo program. The firm made the Eagle module that carried Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the lunar surface for the first manned moon landing in 1969.

Now the company will design a vehicle to help Golden Spike achieve its goal of establishing routine commercial transportation of people to the moon and back by the end of the decade.

"This is a significant step forward in our plans," Gerry Griffin, Golden Spike's board chairman, said in a statement. "Northrop Grumman brings Golden Spike a unique body of knowledge and skills as the only company to ever build a successful human-rated lunar lander, the Apollo Lunar Module."

The founding of Golden Spike (named after the final spike built into the First Transcontinental Railroad), was announced just last month, though the project has been secretly in the works for two and a half years. [ Graphic: How Golden Spike's Moon Landing Plan Works ]

The startup hopes to sell round-trip moon expeditions to foreign countries, research organizations and even some wealthy individuals. Company market studies suggest Golden Spike could sell and carry out 15 to 25 of these trips within 10 years, once it gets going. Each expedition will carry a price tag of roughly $1.5 billion, company officials have said.

To launch these journeys, Golden Spike officials say existing rockets and spacecraft already built or under development can be enlisted. The only major hardware element that must be designed and constructed from the ground up is the lunar lander.

Northrop Grumman will explore a variety of different lunar lander concepts, looking for the best combination of reliability, affordability and operability, officials said.

"We're very proud to be working with Northrop Grumman, which has the most experience and successful performance record for human lunar lander designs in the world," said planetary scientist Alan Stern, Golden Spike's president and chief executive officer.

Microsoft to provide cloud services for city of Chicago in four year deal

There's a cloud hanging over the second city and it belongs to Microsoft. In a release issued today, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced plans to migrate the city's 30,000 civil servants to a cloud-based solution for email and all desktop applications. Apart from the $400,000 the four-year deal is projected to save taxpayers annually, the move to Microsoft's cloud computing for government platform will also help to bolster efficiency and streamline communication internally, as the city goes from three conflicting email systems to just one. According to the city's Department of Innovation and Technology, this department-wide transition should reach completion by the end of 2013. It's not the Windy City's first big leap into remote storage -- its hosted Department of Aviation data there for some time -- but it does mark Emanuel's commitment to modernization. Hit up the break for the city's official PR.

Silver Spruce Resources Reports Results from Big Easy Magnetic ...

Silver Spruce Resources Inc. (TSXV:SSE) reported rsults?from the high resolution, magnetic / VLF-EM survey and sample results for diamond drilling from the Big Easy gold/silver prospect.

As quoted in the press release:

The results show magnetic lows, most likely representing the alteration coincident with the mineralized zones at both the BE and ET zones. These two established zones are joined by a sinuous magnetic low, which may represent alteration/mineralization linking the two known zones. The overall sinuous nature of the magnetic low is believed to be related to crosscutting faults, which may offset the alteration system as shown by magnetic highs representing mafic dikes emplaced along ENE and NW trending structures. The VLF-EM survey shows the ENE and NW trends as conductive zones, most likely representing water filled shear systems.

Silver Spruce?s President and CEO, Peter Dimmell, said:

The significance of the probable continuation of the alteration/mineralization over the 5 km plus strike length from the Big Easy to the ET zone is that the trend is becoming more defined as we continue exploration along the strong, extensive, mineralized alteration zone ? which has only been tested by 12 drill holes over 1.2 km at the Big Easy itself, in the northern part of the property.
