Birmingham City Schools superintendent, board president discuss district's probation

Dr. Craig Witherspoon, superintendent of Birmingham City Schools, joined Alabama's 13 Sunday morning to discuss the district's recent probation.

As we've reported, the Birmingham City School district is on probation.

The probation was implemented by the "Southern Association of Colleges and Schools", also known as "SACS."

The organization cited problems with the district's governance and finance.

The system will be reviewed again in February to determine if the probation will be lifted.

Cleveland kidnapping victim Amanda Berry surprises concert crowd

Just a day after kidnapper Ariel Castro plead guilty, one of the three women held captive in his home for a decade made an appearance at a concert. TODAY's Jenna Wolfe reports.

By The Associated Press

One of three women held captive in a Cleveland home for a decade appeared at a public event for the first time since her rescue, a day after her abductor pleaded guilty in the case.

Amanda Berry made a surprise appearance at the daylong concert RoverFest in Cleveland on Saturday night, walking on stage with her family and waving at the cheering crowd. Wearing sunglasses and dressed in jeans and a black T-shirt, Berry smiled broadly while acknowledging the applause, but she didn't address the crowd. The rapper Nelly called Berry back to the stage after his music set.

The appearance came a day after Ariel Castro, a former school bus driver, pleaded guilty to 937 counts in a deal that will send him to prison for life without parole, plus 1,000 years.

Berry, now 27, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight disappeared between 2002 and 2004 when they were 14, 16 and 20 years old. They escaped in May when Berry kicked out part of a door and called to neighbors for help.

Berry told a police dispatcher in a dramatic 911 call: "Help me. I'm Amanda Berry. I've been kidnapped, and I've been missing for 10 years, and I'm, I'm here, I'm free now."

This frame grab image from a July 2, 2013 video courtesy of Hennes Paynter Communications shows freed kidnapped victim Amanda Berry, as she speaks at the law offices of Jones Day in Cleveland, Ohio. Berry made a surprise public appearance at a concert in Cleveland on Saturday.

Castro, 53, who was arrested and jailed shortly afterward, was accused of raping and beating the three repeatedly. He also fathered a 6-year-old daughter with Berry, authorities say.

The women didn't attend the court proceeding but said in a statement that they were relieved by the conviction and looking forward to the end of the legal proceedings.

Berry and the other women said she had accepted a ride from Castro, who had remained friends with DeJesus' family and attended vigils over the years marking her disappearance.

Castro was accused of restraining the women, sometimes chaining them to a pole in a basement, to a bedroom heater or inside a van. The indictment included two counts of aggravated murder related to accusations that he punched and starved one of the women until she miscarried.

Earlier this month, the three women offered thanks on YouTube for emotional and financial backing they've received since going "through hell and back."

UK Border Police can take your phone, and everything inside it

What Governments are doing in relation to our phones is a hot topic at the moment, but a new report out of the UK claims that the Border Police can seize your phone and download all the data within it. The procedure can be applied under a domestic anti-terror law, with a blanket power so broad that reasonable suspicion doesn't even need to be established before hand. The report comes by way of UK newspaper The Telegraph:

Officers use counter-terrorism laws to remove a mobile phone from any passenger they wish coming through UK air, sea and international rail ports and then scour their data.

The blanket power is so broad they do not even have to show reasonable suspicion for seizing the device and can retain the information for ?as long as is necessary?.

Affected data can include call history, contacts, photos, and who the person is texting or emailing, but not the content of the messages. All border crossings fall under this, be that airports, seaports, even the international rail crossing between the UK and France. An independent reviewer of terror laws, David Anderson QC, is expected to raise concerns and recommend proper checks to ensure this power isn't being abused.

Given the furore across the water at this time, this latest report is surely not going to sit well with travellers to the UK, and even nationals. Speaking personally as a Brit, I can imagine how I'd feel if I were presented with this upon my return from a trip. What do you guys think? A step too far under the cover of 'anti-terror,' or are you happier that action is being taken at all?

The Augusta Chronicle

AUGUSTA ? At work, he calls her ?Pastor Andrea,? and she calls him ?Pastor Jason.?

At home, they do without the formal titles. They?re just Andrea and Jason, husband and wife.

The Revs. Jason Peterson and Andrea Windsor-Peterson were recently installed as dual pastors of Advent Lutheran Church.

The church of 300 on Washington Road in Augusta called the new pastors this spring.

?We?re a team,? Jason said. ?We share a calling.?

Together, they hope to work with the congregation to help it continue to grow as a welcoming, life-giving church.

?We want to help everyone to feel they belong and they have purpose in Jesus Christ,? Andrea said. ?All people are welcomed in this place.?

The two met on the first day of class at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, on the steps of their dorm building. Three months later, they were engaged. They married two years after that, in 2002.

After working with separate congregations in South Carolina, they accepted a shared call to Memphis, Tenn., where they worked as ?mission redevelopers,? tasked with reviving a small congregation. They stayed for nine years.

They made the move to Augusta with their two children ? Kate, 8, and Timmy, 7 ? this summer. Jason?s first day was April 28, the 50th anniversary of the church. Andrea stayed in Memphis for a few weeks, while the kids finished school. After three weeks in Augusta, she said, ?I?ve learned just how generous people are. They?re just so wonderful. I can?t tell you what a joy it is to work with them and equip them. It?s sort of a dream call.?

The church was really just looking for one pastor.

?They looked to interview one candidate, but got two,? Jason said. ?There was a real excitement about it.?

While they considered taking separate calls, it?s easier, in some ways, to work together. The family is able to worship together on Sundays. There?s no question about which church the children should attend. Both pastors get time away from preaching, which helps avoid burnout.

The church also benefits from two pastors.

?The gift is you have a choice,? said Andrea. ?You have two different perspectives on how to do something.?

They have different passions in ministry, different styles of teaching and different communication styles.

?It?s becoming a little bit more common, especially in the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America),? Jason said.

Each preaches two Sundays in a row before switching off. When one prepares the sermon, the other administers the sacraments.

?We have this joke that we?re off duty and get to worship,? Andrea said with a laugh.

They spend more time together than most married couples, Jason said. Sometimes it feels as though their marriage and family life are on display, even more so than the average pastor?s, and that?s OK, Andrea said.

?You are on display and it?s humbling,? she said. ?If the people of God weren?t so gracious, it wouldn?t work.?

A few years ago, they set some ground rules.

?We do have one rule,? Andrea said. ?We don?t talk about our moms and the church in our bedroom.?

Vice President Releases Book ?Smritiyan? by Garima Sanjay

The Vice President of India Shri M. Hamid Ansari released a book entitled ?Smritiyan? authored by Smt. Garima Sanjay, a professional author & documentary filmmaker here today. Shri Ansari complimented the author for bringing out a fine book and also wished her good success in her future creative endeavour.

The book says that Life in general throws challenges before we can fulfil our aspirations. At times we beat those challenges, but sometimes, especially in case of our personal and emotional lives, we?re unable to face these challenges and we simply give up, compromise with the situation and accept our failure. In such a situation, we blame our luck; or as shown in stories/ films we blame certain villains in our life for our failures.

Tips for Cheap Craft Supplies and Some Fun Kid Crafts

MP900177857

The kids are out of school and this summer, when we aren?t taking advantage of all the cool free stuff we can do around town, we will be working on some craft projects.

I love crafting with my kids, but it can be pricey to get everything needed for 3 months worth of crafts for 4 kids. Over the years, I?ve learned a bit of what?s a waste and what?s worth the splurge.

Here are a few resources to help you stock up, without breaking the bank, and a few of our favorites crafts.

Stocking Up on Supplies

Shop your home ? It?s always best to take stock of what you already have on hand. You probably have a good deal of supplies around the house, or can quickly save them up (think cans, paper bags, corks etc)

Shop your yard ? take a bucket with you on your next nature walk, and gather little twigs, sticks, rocks and pinecones.

Dollar Tree (or some other dollar store) ? drawing pads, construction paper, toothpicks, popsicle sticks, paper plates stickers, etc can all be found for $1.00; some items are even 3 or 4 for a $1.00. (There is even a great site filled exclusively with crafts made from dollar store supplies.)

Oriental Trading ? Such a great place for stocking up and getting ?everything included? craft kids. I find that waiting a couple of weeks into the summer, after the VBS groups have ordered, things go on sale as they try to clear out the warehouse in anticipation of fall and back-to-school stuff.

A Few Of Our Favorite Crafts

Here are a few of our favorites. Many are kept in rotation year after year, because they are enjoyed so much.

God?s Eye ? remember these from summer camps? So easy to make and only a few supplies needed.

Paper Bead Bracelet ? hang on to some old catalogs and magazines! This craft will put them to good use, and keep your kids busy.

Kaleidoscopes ? I always enjoyed the ?paper tube with melted crayon in wax paper? version as a kid, but this takes it to another level, using stuff you probably already have on hand.

While crafting does take some planning, to ensure everything is ready and all enjoy the process, it doesn?t have to be pricey or difficult.

Steinway accepts $438M buyout from Kohlberg & Co.

(AP) ? The famed piano maker Steinway is hoping that the sale of the company to private equity firm Kohlberg & Co. will strike the right chord.

Steinway Musical Instruments, which has been in business for 160 years, said Monday that it has agreed to be bought by Kohlberg for about $438 million.

Steinway pianos have been a status symbol and a must-have luxury in concert halls for more than a century, but the storied company suffered during the recession. While it has recovered, its shares have not returned to their peak, reached just six months before the recession began.

Last week, the company closed on the sale of Steinway Hall just down the street from Carnegie Hall, its flagship showroom in Manhattan where generations of pianists have taken pianos for a spin.

However, with the housing crisis fading and the U.S. economy picking up steam, Kohlberg is betting on a bright future for Steinway at home and abroad, says Burt Flickinger III, president of retail consultancy Strategic Resource Group.

A typical Steinway grand piano costs around $50,000, but can run much higher.

Kohlberg, which will take the company private, is opening a tender offer to buy all of Steinway's outstanding stock for $35 per share, a 15 percent premium to its Friday closing price of $30.43.

The board of the Waltham, Mass., company unanimously recommended that shareholders tender their stock.

The deal includes a 45-day "go-shop" period in which Steinway may seek out alternative bids.

Steinway & Sons was founded in 1853 by German immigrant Henry Engelhard Steinway in a loft on Manhattan's lower west side. Steinway was a master cabinet maker who built his first piano in the kitchen of his Seesen, Germany home, according to the company website.

Over the next 30 years, Steinway and his sons, C.F. Theodore, Charles, Henry Jr., William and Albert developed the modern piano. The company's products now include Bach Stradivarius trumpets, Selmer Paris saxophones, C.G. Conn French horns, Leblanc clarinets, King trombones, Ludwig snare drums and Steinway & Sons pianos.

"Kohlberg's long history of collaboration to grow and expand some of the world's leading consumer brands makes us an ideal partner for Steinway to accelerate its global expansion, while ensuring the artisanal manufacturing processes that make the company's products unique are preserved, celebrated and treasured," Kohlberg partner Christopher Anderson said.

The buyout is expected to close in the third quarter.

Flickinger says that emerging markets like China present a big opportunity for Steinway and for Kohlberg. "Families will want their children to play on the best piano," Flickinger said of China, the world's second largest economy, where incomes are on the rise.

Shares of Steinway Musical Instruments Inc. jumped $4.83, or more than 15 percent, to $35.26 in afternoon trading. Shares this year have risen close to 70 percent.

Mich. city's changing garage rules worry Arabs

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) ? As early summer days on Orchard Street draw to a close, sliding doors open, inviting fresh air and neighbors into side-by-side garages.

More patio than parking place or storage for power tools, Mariam Khalaf said her garage is primarily for "chilling purposes" ? including smoking, eating and watching TV with family and friends, including next-door neighbors, Muheeb Nabulsy and his wife, Fatima Mkkawi.

Khalaf and Nabulsy say gathering in their east-side garages never invited scrutiny until they installed the sliding doors last year in front of the more traditional electric ones. Now, officials in the Detroit suburb are looking at changing an ordinance on garage use, arguing that as people get a little too comfortable hanging out in the garage, more cars are clogging side streets.

Many who've made the unsanctioned transition are part of Dearborn's nearly 100,000 Arab-American residents, one of the largest such communities outside of the Middle East and a third of the city's population. The garages are a continuation of marathon socializing sessions that started many years ago in their home countries under shady trees, often accompanied by coffee and a water pipe, known as a hookah or argileh.

"They migrated over time to the garage as an extension of the living place, and here comes the complaint from people who don't have that as part of their tradition," said Nabeel Abraham, a Dearborn resident and an instructor and administrator at a Dearborn community college. "I think it's a class, ethnic reaction."

Not so, say Dearborn officials, who say the ordinance-tightening isn't meant to target Arabs or anyone else. They don't want the garages, which they contend aren't built to the same standards as the rest of a home, to become "habitable" places for cooking or sleeping.

They say the structures aren't meant to be living spaces, so building permits can't be issued to convert them. That conversion, city spokeswoman Mary Laundroche said, is not only illegal but also isn't inspected for safety.

"We're trying to find a solution that is safe and acknowledges the way garages are being used," she said.

Khalaf and Nabulsy attended a meeting this spring to explain what they do in their garages ? and what they don't. They were each issued citations last summer and the doors were inspected, though their court challenges are ongoing.

Laundroche said the city is trying to work with residents and enforcement "has been put on hold."

The interiors of Nabulsy's and Khalaf's garages resemble patios outfitted with furniture, TVs and tile floors, but also incorporate storage areas typical of any garage.

Nabulsy said he and his wife were inspired by sliding doors on a nearby garage after renovating their house. They no longer wanted to smoke inside their home but liked having fresh air, a street view and protection from insects and the elements, so they installed their own.

But both said they received "stop-work orders" and visits by a city inspector. Nabulsy said an inspector came twice and saw nothing objectionable, but he hasn't yet received a permit.

"When (the inspector) entered the garage, he said, 'I don't know why I'm here,'" Nabulsy said over coffee and cigarettes during a recent evening in Khalaf's garage. Both even fashioned ramps that allow vehicles to get over the door frames and into the garage.

What any new ordinance will say is unclear. A city attorney is still working on a draft of the revision, which is expected to be ready for the Planning Commission's consideration at its July 8 meeting. An early version prohibited sliding doors and tile floors.

What's tricky is how to define "living space."

"I think your home is your home," said commission Chairman Gary Errigo. "There was someone who spoke who said they're sitting in their garage in a lounge chair and a police car drives by and they pack up their chair and run inside. It shouldn't be like that, and it's not like that."

Errigo uses his garage for his passions: car collecting and art. And he knows of many ? Arabs and non-Arabs ? who do the same.

"The garage ordinance currently says you have to be able to park your car into your garage. Well, there's a lot of folks who just can't do that. Not because they live in their garage, but because they have stuff. ... Man caves, and that kind of thing ? this is the era we're in."

Errigo doesn't think having a spare refrigerator in the garage is a problem, but he doesn't want the structures to become crash pads or places where meals are prepared. In that case, they should be evaluated and taxed accordingly.

If the ordinance is approved by the Planning Commission, the City Council will have the final say.

Abraham said city officials will have to ensure that any changes are enforced evenly and fairly across ethnic, class and neighborhood lines.

"What's the difference between sitting together and smoking an argileh or cigar and having tea, or having a homemade brew?" said Abraham, who doesn't have a garage hangout. "This town has a law for everything and anything ? (it) needs to loosen up a little bit."

Wikileaks founder says Snowden info will keep getting published

By Deborah Charles

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said on Sunday that Edward Snowden made sure that the information he took about U.S. surveillance programs will continue to be published regardless of what happens to the former U.S. spy agency contractor.

Assange criticized the United States for revoking Snowden's passport and said it would not stop the classified information taken by the 30-year-old former contractor from getting out.

"Look, there is no stopping the publishing process at this stage," Assange said in an interview with ABC's "This Week" television show. "Great care has been taken to make sure that Mr. Snowden can't be pressured by any state to stop the publication process."

He did not directly respond when asked if WikiLeaks was in possession of the files.

Last week, Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian journalist who first published the classified information released by Snowden, said Snowden had made encrypted copies of his files and distributed them in case anything happened to him.

Greenwald told The Daily Beast that the people in possession of these files "cannot access them yet because they are highly encrypted and they do not have the passwords." But Greenwald said "if anything happens at all to Edward Snowden, he told me he has arranged for them to get access to the full archives."

Snowden left his job as an NSA contractor in Hawaii last month and went to Hong Kong before Britain's Guardian newspaper and the Washington Post published articles based on top-secret documents he took from the government that detailed U.S. surveillance programs.

After hiding in Hong Kong he fled Moscow, where he remains in hiding at the Sheremetyevo airport. The U.S. government has charged Snowden under the 1917 Espionage Act with theft and passing classified communications to an "unauthorized person."

Snowden is currently stuck in legal limbo in a transit area of the Moscow airport. Assange has said Snowden, who has sought legal advice from WikiLeaks, has requested asylum in Ecuador. But Snowden's passport was revoked by Washington and an Ecuadorean travel document he used to travel to Russia from Hong Kong has been declared invalid by Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa.

Correa told Reuters in Ecuador on Sunday that Snowden's fate is in the hands of Russian authorities. He said Quito cannot begin considering asylum for Snowden until he reaches Ecuador or an Ecuadorean embassy.

Assange sought asylum from Ecuador last year and is living in Ecuador's London embassy to avoid being extradited to Sweden, which wants to question him about allegations of sexual assault and rape.

Assange said the United States had "marooned" Snowden in Russia by revoking his passport.

"Is that really a great outcome by the State Department?" Assange asked, saying that Washington had put Snowden through a "meat grinder" although "Mr. Snowden has not been convicted of anything."

In a separate interview, President Barack Obama's national security adviser, Tom Donilon, said since Snowden was not traveling on valid papers he should be returned to the United States "because he's wanted here for a crime."

Donilon said Washington had been in discussions with the Russian government through law enforcement channels on a regular basis about Snowden.

"And I have to agree with (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin, which - when he said the other day that it would be better for Mr. Snowden to decide where - when he's leaving ... sooner rather than later," Donilon said on CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS." "We agree with that - that the sooner that this can be resolved, the better."
