Online Speech Therapy Helps Union County School System Better Serve Its Special Needs Students

PresenceLearning provides rural Georgia-based district with cost-effective solution to fill gaps in speech therapy services

SAN FRANCISCO, August 27, 2012 ? To overcome the costs and time constraints associated with speech language pathologists (SLPs) traveling to the district?s extremely rural school locations and to lessen the case load for current SLPs in the district, UnionCountySchoolSystem in northern Georgia adopted PresenceLearning, the leading provider of live online speech therapy services to K-12 students. After a successful pilot of PresenceLearning?s services in May 2012, the district will start using live online speech therapy this fall for a portion of the district?s students receiving speech language services.

?We received great feedback from students, parents, current SLPs and district staff after piloting PresenceLearning last school year,? said Kristy Chapman, special education director of the Union County Board of Education. ?Given our rural location, the virtual access to SLPs, in addition to the privacy, availability and ease-of-use of the services, makes PresenceLearning a great fit for our district.?

Located in the Appalachian Mountains in upper northeast corner of Georgia, Union County consists of six schools ? one primary school, one elementary school, one middle school, one high school, one K12 school and one alternative education school. The district currently has approximately 2,700 K12 students, including approximately 350 special needs students with individualized education programs (IEPs). This coming school year, PresenceLearning will be the primary speech therapy service provider for a selected group of elementary through high school students.

?PresenceLearning allows us to serve a portion of our students with special needs without having to overload our SLPs,? said Chapman. ?We would love to expand our district?s use of PresenceLearning to more students in the future.?

PresenceLearning offers innovative, onlinespeechtherapy that draws from a nationwide network of highly-qualified, certified therapists who are available whenever and where ever they are needed. Through PresenceLearning, schools are able to offer an effective speech therapy program that provides improved therapy outcomes and favorable cost comparisons to traditional speech therapy programs. Additional advantages with PresenceLearning include better access to technical specialists as well as culturally and linguistically diverse speech language pathologists.

The Rebirth of Recess

Every schoolchild who?s ever squirmed in his seat, anxious for recess to arrive, can sympathize with students in Chicago. This year, many public schools in that city are scheduled to have recess for the first time in three decades. Chicago?s long recess drought isn?t unusual. Even before No Child Left Behind, recess was an endangered species. Since NCLB, every minute of the school day has been scrutinized for its instructional value?and recess, a break from instruction, often didn?t survive the scrutiny. It was, by definition, a waste of time.

But while administrators were trying to get rid of recess, academics were studying it?that is, they were studying the time when children weren?t studying. The new science of recess says that recess isn?t a waste of time at all. ?Having recess is much, much, much better than not having recess,? says Anthony Pellegrini, a professor of educational psychology at the University of Minnesota who?s written extensively on the subject. ?That?s unequivocal, I feel. That?s a no-brainer.? That?s good news for children in Chicago squirming in their seats. But what does recess look like when no schoolchild has ever had it before?

It?s an ironic turn of events: For years, schools have been getting rid of recess to spend more time on math and reading. It is notoriously hard to get reliable numbers on recess?recess policies vary from year to year, school to school, even classroom to classroom?but numerous surveys have found recess time declining. That?s especially true in poorer school districts, where test scores are frequently low and principals panicked. The numbers show a clear trend: The more minority students a school has, and the lower the income level of their parents, the less time allotted for recess?nearly half of poor children go all day without it. They don?t even have anywhere to have it: In Chicago, nearly 100 elementary and middle schools have no playgrounds at all. (The American Association of Pediatrics recently issued an impassioned statement on the ?play deprivation? experienced by children in poverty.)

The arguments against recess are simple and no-nonsense, especially for these schools: What?you want the kids to play kickball when they?re failing math? When the Atlanta public schools got rid of recess, its superintendent famously said, ?We are intent on improving academic performance. You don't do that by having kids hanging on the monkey bars."

These arguments work, Pellegrini says, ?because attacking recess has got this sort of intuitive feel: If you give kids more time doing something, they?ll do better in school. When in fact the opposite is probably the case.? Repeated studies have shown that when recess is delayed, children pay less and less attention. They are more focused on days when they have recess. A major study in Pediatrics found that children with more than 15 minutes of recess a day were far better behaved in class than children who had shorter recess breaks or none at all.

They?ll get more out of class, too: Children seem to learn more efficiently when information is spaced out?when it is distributed over time. It?s been widely documented that the brain needs a break. High-performing East Asian schools have famously long school days?but much of the extra time is taken up by recess, not instruction. Which might be why recess is now back, even in places like Atlanta (although it is squeezed for time).

Despite the cognitive and social benefits of recess, principals still hate it: In the scholarship on recess, they inevitably describe their recess periods as total chaos. In Chicago, recess has been out of the schools so long that principals are nervous about having it back.

Sony's tiny ruggedized Action Cam gets official with 16MP Exmor R, WiFi, $199+ price tag (hands-on)

Sony's tiny ruggedized Action Cam gets more official with 16MP Exmor R, WiFi, $199 price tag handson video

Remember that itsy bitsy GoPro competitor we spotted at Sony's CE Week booth earlier this summer? Well, it's gearing up for an official release late next month. Dubbed Action Cam -- a fitting name given that it'll live mounted anywhere from sky diving helmets to downhill skis -- it'll ship in late September or early October for $199. In a surprising twist, the incredibly small HD shooter will also be getting WiFi -- that version will be available for $270. Both cameras are identical save for wireless functionality, but considering that WiFi enables remote configuration and viewfinder capability for framing your shots (there's no video-capable LCD on the device itself), you're gonna want to shell out the extra 70 bucks. Regardless of which flavor you choose, you'll net a very capable camcorder with a 16-megapixel Exmor R sensor (great for low-light shooting) and fixed-zoom Carl Zeiss lens, complete with SteadyShot image stabilization, a 1080/30p capture mode and a 720p option at 120 frames-per-second, enabling some pretty slick slow-motion effects.

The Action Cam is a modular system, so you can count on a bevy of accessories -- there will even be a "Handycam Adaptor," which comes complete with a 2-7inch display and a familiar camcorder interface. More standard options include an adhesive mount pack ($20, though two ship with the cam), a bar/bike mount ($30), angle mount ($30), a replacement housing that's waterproof to 60 meters and offers a standard tripod socket ($40 -- you'll get one in the box), two head straps ($25-30) and a suction cup ($30). It also uses removable storage (microSD), a swappable battery, and includes HDMI, USB and audio input jacks.

We weren't able to take the camera out on any wild adventure shoots, though plenty of professionals have, from the looks of the demo reel on display at Sony's event (and included at the end of our hands-on video after the break). We did get to play with the remote viewfinder feature, however, paired with the Android PlayMemories app (also available for iOS). This tool worked quite well over WiFi, with decent response and a usable framerate (for framing you shot, at least). The Action Cam itself feels quite solid, despite its size, especially when paired with the thick plastic housing (it's designed for use both underwater, and on land). What we're not quite clear on is battery life, which will surely factor into any purchase decision -- that detail will likely come to light as we near launch. You can take a closer look at the camera and accessories in our gallery below, and the hands-on video (complete with remote viewfinder demo) after the break.

Finance for Freelancers ? Book Review

If you are new to freelancing or your idea of bookkeeping is a pile of paper scraps that you keep jammed in the back of your desk, then Rockable Press?s latest book, Finance for Freelancers, will make for valuable reading.

What?s Inside?

Finance for Freelancers

The truth of the matter is, most of us could care less when it comes to the questions of finance in our freelance business. Isn?t bookkeeping just something to put off until that sick feeling in your stomach forces you to do a marathon session of filling, itemizing, balancing, and?I think I?m going to be sick.

I mean even look at the word ?bookkeeping?. It?s just begging for a hyphen and there it is just sitting there looking stupid with its double k?s. It?s just so smug.

Well, there?s good news on the horizon! You no longer have to be a bookkeeping bigot like myself. Author Martha Retallick is here to save your bacon with a little Finance 101 in her book: Finance for Freelancers. This book is designed to help introduce new freelancers to the wide world of managing your business? money. And for those dragging their heels, the book will deliver a swift kick in the freelance derri?re.

Truth be told, a lot of creative freelancers don?t like to deal with the financial side of their businesses. This aversion to accounting can lead to bills stacking up, checking accounts going unbalanced, invoices not being sent, and clients not paying.

Martha goes step by step through the basics on setting up your business with a solid accounting foundation. From bookkeeping to picking out an accountant, the book will give you a great introduction to some of the things you should be thinking about, and the areas you?re going to want to address so that you don?t find yourself buried under a mountain of paperwork, or even worse, a mountain of debt.

The Joys of Getting Paid Promptly

I like getting paid. In fact, if all my job consisted of was me getting paid, I think I?d be a happy camper. And I don?t think I have to stretch my imagination to guess that all freelancers have a particular fondness to wrapping up a project and getting the final payment. We all need income to run our business, but getting paid is not always as simple as sending out an invoice.

That?s why Finance for Freelancers dedicates an entire chapter to the art of not only getting paid, but getting paid promptly. That?s a whole different skill set.

One of the easiest ways to run into freelancing trouble is when the money isn?t coming in fast enough. And, sad to say, the blame for some of this trouble often lies with the freelancer.

Your business needs cash flow. And part of being a successful freelancer is not only making sure we have enough billable hours to stay afloat, but also making sure those billable hours get paid for in a timely manner. While big numbers look great on invoices and accounting printouts, they won?t magically turn into beer and skittles without you being there to collect on them.

This can get particularly difficult when you throw subcontractors into the mix. Finance for Freelancers goes over some good ground rules for how to best work with subcontractors and how you can make sure you?re not left holding the bag if a client goes south on you.

The secret to managing big projects is to stop viewing yourself as a one-man band. Those days are over. You?re a symphony conductor now. And, like real-life conductors, you may have to work out conflicts between subcontractors.

Taxes

I?m sorry I had to bring this up, and I know you don?t want to talk about it, but taxes don?t seem to be going away anytime soon. There will always be that dreaded time of year when we are all huddled up in dusty rooms trying to account for expenditures and liabilities, and let?s face it; we?d probably all rather be outside, or dead.

Like it or not, we all need a plan for taxes. And Finance for Freelancers recommends getting proactive with your taxes. In a lot of cases, this means finding and hiring a good accountant. For several years I thought I could be a cheapskate and just buy a tax program and do it myself. And while that does work for some freelancers, it meant a whole heap of stress for me every year. Last year I just hired an accountant and let them do their thing. I have not regretted that decision.

Sorry to break the news to you, but you can?t claim your cat as a business expense on your tax return. She may be your most trusted business confidante, but her food and vet?s bills just aren?t deductible.

Martha will help you look at how to find a freelance-friendly accountant and give you suggestions on how to start a program for saving for the tax season. After all, paying for taxes is no fun, but it is so much worse when you have no savings to pay them with.

Conclusions

While this book won?t turn you into a chartered accountant, it introduces you to all the areas you need to focus on when trying to run your freelance business successfully. Martha even includes an exhaustive list of book recommendations for further study if you really want to kick your freelance finances into high gear.

The eBook Finance for Freelancers is available from Rockable Press for $15.

Verizon Turbine 7.0 in the works, likely to be ZTE V66 tablet

Verizon Turbine 70 appears to be in the works, likely to be ZTE V66 tablet

What you see above isn't a whole lot to go off of in terms of details, but it's still a bit significant for tablet fans regardless. The image, which displays a page hiding deep within Verizon's internal system, offers the first confirmation of the ZTE V66 tablet's destiny: it shall ride onto Big Red's LTE network as the Verizon Turbine 7.0. We guess the latter name is the catchier of the two. Few other details are known at this point -- hence, the incredibly bare product page -- but the tablet was originally rumored to sport a 7-inch (1,280 x 800) display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and a 4,000mAh battery. We'd venture to guess that an OS jump to ICS or Jelly Bean should be in the works as well, unless Verizon wants its brand new slate to be dead in the water before it even launches.

[Thanks, Anonymous]

SEO Best Practices: For Keyword Density, Less is More | Herwitz ...

The rules for keyword use are changing as Google and other search engines develop more sophisticated algorithms for page rankings.

It used to be that you?d use as many of your keywords as possible, high on the page and throughout your homepage, especially, as well as in hidden meta-tags (no longer relevant), title tags, headings and subheads. ?Black hat? webspammers would pack long strings of keywords in the background of a page, unseen by the human eye but detected by search engines, and inject keyword links out of context.

Keyword Stuffing Can Hurt Your Rankings
But now so-called keyword stuffing can actually lower your rankings. Google, in particular, continues to refine their search algorithms to punish SEO tricksters and reward ?white hat? developers who create excellent, relevant content for their websites.

Most significantly, Google now recognizes synonyms for search terms relevant to your copy and rewards your for keyword phrases that are woven naturally into content.

Say, for example, you?re a CPA offering small business accounting services and tax preparation. You do basic keyword research and discover that both of those phrases have robust search. But the phrase ?small business accounting services? is a mouthful and it doesn?t feel natural as you write, knowing you want your text to sound conversational and client-centered.

Rest assured that Google will recognize a phrase like ?accounting services for small businesses? to be the equivalent of the precise keyword match. You could even use a string of phrases such as ?accounting services, including tax preparation, for small businesses? and not damage your search optimization.

Use Keywords Naturally, as in a Real Conversation
The key is to keep your content readable, relevant and informative. You need to identify your most important keyword phrases and use them intelligently throughout your website, as you would in a conversation. More and more, Google can read your site and understand it as a human would. Scary but amazing!

Bottom line: Don?t stuff keywords. Include them in title tags, headlines and subheads, but keep them in context to boost search optimization. You?re writing for your ideal client, first and foremost. Keep it clean, clear and conversational. Less really is more.

Here?s an excellent interview with Google SEO guru Matt Cutts by Karon Thackston, from her Marketing Words Copywriting Blog, that explains more:?Matt Cutts Reveals Google?s Updated Copywriting Strategy.

And here?s more detail from Cutts himself: Another step to reward high-quality sites.

Armstrong, who described his first steps on the lunar surface as a "giant leap for all mankind," died on Saturday (Aug. 25). He had undergone?coronary?bypass surgery on Aug. 7, two days after his 82nd birthday.?Armstrong's death was confirmed?in a statement by his family.

"Neil Armstrong has passed away following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures," his family wrote on the website neilarmstronginfo.com. "Neil was our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend."

First man?

Selected with NASA's second group of astronauts in 1962,?Neil Armstrong?first flew in space as the command pilot of the Gemini 8 mission in March 1966. On the sixth crewed flight of NASA's two-seater capsule, Armstrong and pilot David Scott achieved the first docking of two spacecraft in orbit, linking up with an unmanned Agena target vehicle. [Photos: Neil Armstrong Remembered]

But the flight was a near disaster, suffering the first critical in-space failure of a U.S. spacecraft after a stuck thruster set the Gemini spacecraft spinning. Armstrong ultimately regained control by using their re-entry system thrusters, steadying the spacecraft and forcing an early, but safe end to the mission.

Three years later, as spacecraft commander for?Apollo 11,?the first manned lunar landing mission, Armstrong gained the distinction of being the first man to land a craft on the moon and the first to step on its surface.

"He was the best, and I will miss him terribly," Apollo 11 command module pilot Michael Collins said in a statement released by NASA.

Armstrong's first words upon becoming the first person to step onto another planetary body on July 20, 1969 ? "That's?one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind" ? instantly became a part of history.

Together with lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin (then Edwin Aldrin), Armstrong explored the Sea of Tranquility during a 2 hour, 36 minute moonwalk. He and Aldrin collected 48.5 pounds (22 kilograms) of lunar material,?including 50 moon rocks, deployed science experiments and planted the U.S. flag.

A plaque attached to their lunar lander "Eagle" read in part "We came in peace for all mankind," which underscored that Armstrong and Aldrin were there as representatives of all humans.

Tips for Installing Bathroom Shower | Home Design and Interior

Installing bathroom shower needs expertise and knowledge in relation to pipes or plumbing works, or maybe you ask one expert help, even before starting the installation. If you know the cost and labor to think as little as possible because then you can install yourself if you already have an existing line of pipe in your bathroom, you can use them and as a line for the bathroom, the install. You can save money and time on the process, check to see the line, if there are no holes and it still works well.

Before you install a shower in the bathroom, make sure that the flooring can take up the weight that you put the phone down. You can for expert opinion on the matter. Then you can to prepare for the shower for installation. Have a framework that will support the bathroom and that is perfectly fit to the shower. You can use the bathroom to put my head, it makes it easier for the framework and to measure with certainty. Be sure that when the legs of the shower is positioned correctly, that included, according to the manufacturer. After taking a shower in the right position, you can then adjust the legs to support the bath, although it is not even the ground.

A solution for your taps will be very difficult and may even wasted the bathroom is already in place, it will, this should be the next thing you do. The bathroom is very likely conceived in the capacity of both waste and overflow unit. Water faucets are on site with a rubber gasket, the water-tight sealing of the valve to the bathroom, which is then fixed in place with guarantees. Use of a silicone in ensuring watertight seal around the overflow and waste. The waste and valves are then connected to the tubes through the flexible tubing.

First check whether the bathroom and the adjacent wall are both clean and free of grease and dirt, then run a plumbing class sealant on the joints and dip your finger when in a water-soap then do your finger on the seal. So you are sure that the sealant has no gaps at the edges and it is smooth. Expand your shower hose from the mixer tap of the shower and attach it to a riser rail of the adjacent wall in order to give a support of the shower head. The rail allows the head of the shower to be lowered or raised to comfortably accommodate the shortest and the tallest people in the house.

Will then place a shower screen, the height of the outer edge of the bath, so that your bathroom is protected from the sprinkle of water when the shower is used. Get the right dimension of the edge and that the screen is reasonable to prevent it leaking water at the edge of the floor of the bathroom. Last but not least, always keep in mind to follow the manufacturer?s instructions specifically bathtub with shower.

Dav Whatmore tips Pakistan favourite ahead of Australia series ? Cricket News Update

Pakistan cricket team?s head coach Dav Whatmore feels the former world champions, Australia, whom his men are gearing up to play over the next couple of weeks, are a weaker side than usual.

While speaking to media reporters on the team?s arrival in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), on Saturday, the Australian tactician tipped his side favourites to win the just to begin limited overs series.

?They have had a retirement or two and an injury so I suppose the short answer would be yes,? said Whatmore when asked if the Michael Clarke and Co. was weaker than normal.

?It could be they will try even harder after they lost pretty badly to England ... but conditions are more known to the Pakistan team so from that point of view we hold a bit of an edge," he added further.

Australia go into the limited-overs series against Pakistan at the back of 0-4 ODI series whitewash at the hands of traditional rivals, England. The mighty Aussies were also exposed by the lowly-ranked Afghanistan cricket team during the one-off ODI, at Sharjah on Saturday, August 25, 2012.

Though the Kangaroos managed to win the match comprehensively by 66 runs in the end, their batting line-up struggled to score runs against an inexperienced Afghan attack. Only skipper Michael Clarke, Matthew Wade and Mike Hussey managed to cross 30-run mark.

Their pacers did a magnificent job, but they also struggled to break the 86-run partnership between Mohammad Nabi (46) and Asghar Stanikzai (66).

Pakistan are also coming into the series at the back of an unimpressive ODI record. They faced a 4-0 ODI series whitewash at the hands of England, at the same UAE venues, in February this year, and have recently lost five-ODI series to Sri Lanka 3-1. But Whatmore feels his players performed well against the Islanders last month, and are currently in a good form.

?I honestly thought we were one ODI victory away from (it) being a very good tour in Sri Lanka,? said the former Australian cricketer.

?From positions of strength we managed to snatch defeat and hand the game over...it hasn't been as bad as some people may think,? he added further.

The Pakistan-Australia series gets underway in Sharjah, on Tuesday. All the matches, ODIs and T20Is, will be played in the night, to avoid the worst of the UAE heat.

Web Writing Tips ? Mistakes To Avoid In Web Content Creation

Web Content

Web writing is now a hot career. A lot of peopleboth working in the corporate world and notare into writing for the internet. It?s comparatively easy than other online jobs particularly SEO article writing for those who have the knack for being word mercenaries. Besides, web writing tips abound everywhere so even the first-timers will not remain clueless on how to get the job done. In the following, instead of talking more how-to tips, we will talk about the common mistakes you should not commit when writing web content.

The use of business speak. Web content creation is about writing in simple, understandable, and interesting manner. Business speak, including jargons and technical terms, has no room in this kind of writing. This is because online readers don?t have the time and patience in deciphering it. What they want are plain but informative and engaging articles. Hence, if you want to thrive in the industry, you?d better learn how to do away with trying too hard to sound smart.

The magnification of features. Web writing tips frequently talk about magnifying the features of what your topic is. While it?s OK to present the characteristics of something, it can?t do much when it comes to increasing the effectiveness of an article. See, presenting benefits can go a lot farther. If you tell your readers how they can benefit from choosing what you?re offering, then they can promptly perform the action you want them to do. Say, if you want them to visit a site or purchase a product, show them the great reasons why and they?ll surely move.

The writing for the wrong audience. Most web content writers don?t recognize the vitality of knowing who they are writing for. See, when you create an article, it makes a whole lot of difference if you have a picture of who you are writing it to. This way, you can choose your words and tone appropriately. Your way of speaking with a professor is different with your way of speaking with a child, right? Hence, you must always write for the right audience in your online business today.

Writing too much. Many writers think that the more words they write, the smarter they appear. But, this style doesn?t work among the online public. This is because they are never fond of reading lengthy write-ups. They only have patience to go through 200 to 500-word long articles. Anything higher can already be taxing. Thus, as a writer, it is your job to provide the information they need in the most concise and comprehensible way possible.

Publishing before proofreading. This sounds a stupid mistake but sadly, a significant number of writers still err on this. They click the ?publish? button without even ensuring that all the words are spelled correctly. Consequently, their reputations get hurt by their seemingly minor slip-ups. The truth is, all the lists of web writing tips must emphasize the necessity of proofreading. It doesn?t only make your articles look better but your repute a lot higher too.

AP Interview: Obama on Romney's 'extreme' views

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama said Mitt Romney has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected, trying to discredit his Republican rival at the biggest political moment of his life.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Obama said Romney lacks serious ideas, refuses to "own up" to the responsibilities of what it takes to be president, and deals in factually dishonest arguments that could soon haunt him in face-to-face debates.

Obama also offered a glimpse of how he would govern in a second term of divided government, insisting rosily that the forces of the election would help break Washington's stalemate. He said he would be willing to make a range of compromises with Republicans, confident there are some who would rather make deals than remain part of "one of the least productive Congresses in American history."

With the remarks, Obama set up a contrast between Romney, whom he cast as an extremist pushing staunchly conservative policies, and himself, by saying he would work across party lines. It was a seeming play for the independent voters who decide close elections and tell pollsters they want to see the often-gridlocked politicians in Washington solve the nation's problems.

Mainly, Obama was intent on countering Romney even before his challenger got to the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday in Tampa, Fla. In doing so, the president depicted his opponent as having accumulated ideas far outside the mainstream with no room to turn back.

"I can't speak to Governor Romney's motivations," Obama said. "What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions, that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he's talked about."

Obama spoke to the AP on Thursday before heading off to a long weekend with his family at Camp David, the secluded presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains.

The president was at ease but doggedly on script, steering even personal-themed questions about Romney and running mate Paul Ryan into answers about starkly different visions for helping the middle class.

Romney, a successful former executive of a private equity firm and one-time Massachusetts governor, will introduce himself to a TV audience of millions next Thursday as he takes the convention stage to accept his party's presidential nomination. He has offered himself as a business-minded alternative to Obama and has seized on voter concerns about joblessness and the direction of the nation.

Nearly ten weeks before Election Day, the race is remarkably stable and reflective of a sharply divided nation, with registered voters about evenly split on their choice and nearly a quarter of them unsure or still willing to change their mind. Across the interview, Obama's messages often seemed directed at moderate and independent voters whose sway could make the difference.

Obama's depiction of a Romney presidency grew most pointed when he was asked if his Republican challenger has no core, as one of Obama's top advisers once put it.

The president suggested that whatever Romney really stands for in life is secondary to the promises Romney has made in the campaign.

In explaining his accusation of "extreme" positions, the president cited Romney's call for across-the-board tax cuts that Obama said would mostly help the rich at the expense of everyone else and cost the nation $5 trillion. Obama singled out Romney's opposition to tax credits for producers of wind energy, the kind of issue that carries large political resonance in a battleground state such as Iowa.

And Obama alluded to the provocative issue of abortion, suddenly thrust to the fore this week when Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin said the female body has a way to "shut that whole thing down" when a woman is the victim of "legitimate rape."

The Republican platform in Tampa calls for a ban on abortion with no specific exceptions for rape or other circumstances. Obama predicted that a President Romney would not "stand in the way" if Congress gave him a bill that stripped away women's control over their reproductive health.

Romney is on record, however, as not opposing abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life.

Polling shows social issues such as abortion represent perhaps Obama's best opportunity to draw support from Romney. Obama already holds a broad lead as the candidate more trusted to handle those social issues among Democrats and independents. The issue is one of Romney's biggest vulnerabilities among moderate and liberal Republicans.

Obama also sought to chip away at Romney's trustworthiness, taking fresh shots at Romney's refusal to release years of tax returns for public inspection. He said that position was indicative of a candidate who has a "lack of willingness to take responsibility for what this job entails."

Yet it is the economy that has driven this election and has dominated Obama's message of a middle-class revival.

"We aren't where we need to be. Everybody agrees with that," said Obama, who inherited an economy in free fall and now bears responsibility for a recovery that remains weak. "But Governor Romney's policies would make things worse for middle-class families and offer no prospect for long-term opportunity for those striving to get into the middle class," the president said.

A Romney spokesman, Ryan Williams, jumped on Obama's account in the interview that the economy clearly needs to get better. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan agree," Williams said. "The American people know they aren't better off than they were four years ago."

Obama holds a decisive advantage over Romney when Americans are asked who better understands their daily woes. Yet nearly two-thirds of people in a new AP-GfK poll say the economy is in poor shape, and 60 percent say the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Obama expressed confidence that even voters whose lives have not improved during his term will stick with him as they assess the two candidates.

"If they saw Gov. Romney offering serious proposals that offered some sort of concrete ways in which middle-class families would be helped, then I could understand them thinking about that choice," Obama said. "But that's not what's happening."

And therein lies the central case that Obama made in the interview, as he has made for months, and as he will again at his own party's convention in Charlotte, N.C., in early September.

Obama said he is the candidate whose policies have historically helped the middle class on issues that people care about and that shape the economy ? education, manufacturing, science and research, Medicare, debt reduction, tax rates, health care, consumer protection, college aid, energy.

Williams, the Romney spokesman, responded that Obama has piled up national debt and presided over high unemployment. "Too many middle-class families are going to sleep each night worried," he said. "This may be the best President Obama can do, but it's not the best America can do."

The moment that could finally shake up a close race could come in the three debates Obama and Romney hold in October. The president said Romney could run into trouble because of arguments that are not backed up by facts, citing a widely debunked television ad campaign in which Romney accuses Obama of gutting the work requirement in the federal welfare law.

"It will be a little tougher to defend face-to-face," Obama said.

Obama's view of a different second-term dynamic in Washington, even if both and House Republicans retain power, seems a stretch given the stalemated politics of a divided government. He said two changes ? the facts that "the American people will have voted," and that Republicans will no longer need to be focused on beating him ? could lead to better conditions for deal-making.

If Republicans are willing, Obama said, "I'm prepared to make a whole range of compromises" that could even rankle his own party. But he did not get specific.

The 25-minute interview, conducted in the library of the White House residence, was part of a multi-faceted campaign by Obama's team to snag some of the spotlight during Romney's big week. Obama denied the notion, widely if quietly held in political circles, that the fiercely competitive president is also driven to beat Romney because he does not hold him in high regard.

"I don't really know him well," Obama said. "The big arguments that I have with Governor Romney have to do with where we take this country forward."

New device to remove stroke-causing blood clots proves better than standard tool

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and a common cause of long-term disability in the United States, but doctors have very few proven treatment methods. Now a new device that mechanically removes stroke-causing clots from the brain is being hailed as a game-changer.

In a recent clinical trial, the SOLITAIRE Flow Restoration Device dramatically outperformed the standard mechanical treatment. Findings from the trial, called SOLITAIRE With the Intention for Thrombectomy (SWIFT), are published online August 26 in the journal The Lancet and will also appear in a later print edition of the journal.

SOLITAIRE, which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March, is among an entirely new generation of devices designed to remove blood clots from blocked brain arteries in patients experiencing an ischemic stroke. It has a self-expanding, stent-like design, and once inserted into a blocked artery using a thin catheter tube, it compresses and traps the clot. The clot is then removed by withdrawing the device, reopening the blocked blood vessel.

"This new device is significantly changing the way we can treat ischemic stroke," said the study's lead author, Dr. Jeffrey L. Saver, director of the UCLA Stroke Center and a professor of neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "We are going from our first generation of clot-removing procedures, which were only moderately good in reopening target arteries, to now having a highly effective tool."

Results of the study showed that the device opened blocked vessels without causing symptomatic bleeding in or around the brain in 61 percent of patients. The standard FDA-approved mechanical device -- a corkscrew-type clot remover called the MERCI Retriever -- was effective in 24 percent of cases. The use of SOLITAIRE also led to better survival three months after a stroke. There was a 17.2 percent mortality rate with the new device, compared with a 38.2 percent rate with the older one.

About 87 percent of all strokes are caused by blood clots blocking a blood vessel supplying the brain. The stroke treatment that has received the most study is an FDA-approved clot-busting drug known as tissue plasminogen activator, but this drug must be given within four-and-a-half hours of the onset of stroke symptoms, and even more quickly in older patients.

When clot-busting drugs cannot be used or are ineffective, the clot can sometimes be mechanically removed during, or beyond, the four-and-a-half-hour window. The current study, however, did not compare mechanical clot removal to drug treatment.

For the trial, researchers randomly assigned 113 stroke patients at 18 hospitals to receive either SOLITAIRE or MERCI therapy within eight hours of stroke onset, between January 2010 and February 2011. The patients' average age was 67, and 68 percent were male. The time from the beginning of stroke symptoms to the start of the clot-retriever treatment averaged 5.1 hours. Forty percent of the patients had not improved with standard clot-busting medication prior to the study, while the remainder had not received it.

At the suggestion of a safety monitoring committee, the trial was ended nearly a year earlier than planned due to significantly better outcomes with the experimental device.

Other statistically significant findings included:

? 2 percent of SOLITAIRE-treated patients had symptoms of bleeding in the brain, compared with 11 percent of MERCI patients.

? At the 90-day follow-up, overall adverse event rates, including bleeding in the brain, were similar for the two devices.

? 58 percent of SOLITAIRE-treated patients had good mental/motor functioning at 90 days, compared with 33 percent of MERCI patients.

? The SOLITARE device also opened more vessels when used as the first treatment approach, necessitating fewer subsequent attempts with other devices or drugs.

For juvenile moose, momma's boys and girls fare best

Friday, August 24, 2012

Based on ten years of fieldwork in the Tetons of Wyoming, WCS Conservation Biologist, University of Montana Professor and study author Dr. Joel Berger looked at whether body size of juvenile moose and maternal presence were related to survival of the young animals. In animals from elk to lizards and fish, size matters, and larger individuals enjoy a survival advantage. However, results of Berger's study showed that for juvenile moose, body mass had no significant effect on overwinter survival. Maternal presence did.

The study, "Estimation of Body-Size Traits by Photogrammetry in Large Mammals to Inform Conservation" appears in the early view section of the on-line edition of the journal Conservation Biology.

The study found that orphaned moose in their first winter were subjected to 8 to 47 times more aggression from adult moose than were young moose whose mothers were present. Overall, the survival of orphan calves was about 8 times lower than those with mothers.

Along with facing more aggression from kicking by adult females and being displaced from the best feeding areas, Berger theorized that orphans incur greater metabolic costs and expend more energy in deep snow. Why orphans were attacked more was not clear, but Berger raised the possibility that mothers were trying to maintain more resources for their own offspring.

"These findings highlight the importance of maternal presence rather than body size and suggest policy changes may be warranted in how harvest quotas are set," said Berger. "In some circumstances, the shooting of mothers with young has been permitted under the assumption that calf survival is minimally affected. Clearly, that is not the case."

In another development from the study, Berger pioneered a new method to estimate the size of juveniles without resorting to immobilization by darting or netting by helicopters ? both methods that are stressful to wildlife. Instead, Berger used photogrammetry?a process of using photographs to determine the properties of objects. Digitally measuring head sizes on photographs enabled estimation of juvenile body mass in a quick and non-invasive fashion.

Berger said, "Other methods of acquiring data on large animals are exhaustive, expensive and more invasive. Photogrammetric assessment has shown to be accurate, widely deployable and much easier on the animals and scientists, and the findings in this study illustrate the method can be used to inform conservation planning."

Evolving Web Threats Demand New Approaches to Security for the ...

?

?The threat environment we?re seeing today is radically different from what existed just six months ago. Six months from now, I expect to say the same thing. The actors behind the threats are evolving; the |motivation behind attacks is more difficult to predict and anticipate. So what we stress with our customers is that it?s not enough to have a security strategy in place today; it?s about deploying a long-term security solution that has the flexibility and scalability to adapt to this ever-evolving threat environment.?
- Andy Ellis, Akamai Chief Security Officer
As the world becomes increasingly hyperconnected, the opportunities for innovation and new
business models are virtually limitless. Internet technology, and especially the virtualization and
distributed processing power brought to life through cloud computing, have freed businesses to
explore new business opportunities that simply weren?t possible to consider just a few years ago.
At the same time, however, the complexity and risk associated with those opportunities is great. With so much business-critical information at stake, the need to protect those assets is more important than ever before. The motivations of web-based security threats vary significantly. Known and emerging hacking groups, political protest movements, even governments are among the sources of attacks executed on a global scale, on a daily basis. The goals of these various factions can include:
?Embarrassing and shaming their targets
? Exposing or stealing intellectual property and trade secrets
? Harvesting sensitive data and personally identifiable information (PII)
? Disrupting critical business processes
? Diminishing political stability or furthering a particular political agenda
Clearly, these threats have the potential for enormous ramifications. But so does deploying a security strategy that compromises the user experience, performance, and the ability to innovate online. So is it possible to have a ?No Compromises? security strategy that scales to protect against known and emerging threats while actually providing more freedom to conduct business online, and innovate without the constant fear of attack? We believe so.

Court strikes down graphic warnings for cigarettes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Friday struck down a law that requires tobacco companies to use graphic health warnings, such as of a man exhaling smoke through a hole in his throat.

The 2-1 decision by the court in Washington, D.C., contradicts another appeals court's ruling in a similar case earlier this year, setting up the possibility the U.S. Supreme Court will weigh in on the dispute.

The court's majority in the latest ruling found the label requirement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration violated corporate speech rights.

"This case raises novel questions about the scope of the government's authority to force the manufacturer of a product to go beyond making purely factual and accurate commercial disclosures and undermine its own economic interest -- in this case, by making 'every single pack of cigarettes in the country mini billboard' for the government's anti-smoking message," wrote Judge Janice Rogers Brown of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

The FDA "has not provided a shred of evidence" showing that the graphic labels would reduce smoking, Brown added.

Her opinion largely echoed the complaints of five cigarette companies, including Lorillard Inc and Reynolds American Inc, that challenged the rules.

The FDA has argued the images of rotting teeth and diseased lungs are accurate and necessary to warn consumers -- especially teenagers -- about the risks of smoking.

The health agency was not immediately available to comment after Friday's ruling. The U.S. Department of Justice, which argued the case for the FDA, said it needs to review the ruling before deciding on next steps.

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, which has vigorously supported stricter cigarette laws, urged the government to appeal.

"Today's ruling is wrong on the science and law, and it is by no means the final word on the new cigarette warnings," said Matthew Myers, the group's president, in a statement.

YOUTH EPIDEMIC

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates some 45 million U.S. adults smoke cigarettes, which are the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. And the World Health Organization predicts smoking could kill 8 million people each year by 2030 if governments do not do more to help people quit.

The U.S. Surgeon General warned in March that youth smoking has reached epidemic proportions, as one in four U.S. high school seniors is a regular cigarette smoker, paving the way to a lifetime of addiction.

Congress passed a law in 2009 that gave the FDA broad powers to regulate the tobacco industry, including imposing the label regulation. The law requires color warning labels big enough to cover the top 50 percent of a cigarette pack's front and back panels, and the top 20 percent of print advertisements.

The FDA released nine new warnings in June 2011 that were meant to go into effect this September, the first change in U.S. cigarette warning labels in 25 years. Cigarette packs already carry text warnings from the U.S. Surgeon General.

But the ruling against the FDA means tobacco companies will likely not have to comply with the requirements for now, especially given divergent court rulings.

The U.S. Appeals Court for the 6th Circuit, based in Cincinnati, upheld the bulk of the FDA's new tobacco regulations in March, including the requirement for warning images on cigarette packs.

Most countries in the European Union already carry graphic images to illustrate the health risks of smoking. Earlier this month, Australia took a further step to limit smoking advertising by banning company logos on cigarette packs, and the EU said it was considering a similar ban.
