Unable to work out an extension with James Harden, the Oklahoma City Thunder traded the Sixth Man of the Year to the Houston Rockets on Saturday night, breaking up the young core of the Western Conference champions.
The Thunder acquired guards Kevin Martin and Jeremy Lamb, two first-round picks and a second-round pick in the surprising deal. Oklahoma City also sent center Cole Aldrich and forwards Daequan Cook and Lazar Hayward to Houston.
The Oct. 31 deadline to extend Harden or allow him to become a restricted free agent next July had been hanging over the Thunder from the moment they reported to training camp.
"We wanted to sign James to an extension, but at the end of the day, these situations have to work for all those involved. Our ownership group again showed their commitment to the organization with several significant offers," Thunder general manager Sam Presti said in a statement.
"We were unable to reach a mutual agreement, and therefore executed a trade that capitalized on the opportunity to bring in a player of Kevin's caliber, a young talent like Jeremy and draft picks, which will be important to our organizational goal of a sustainable team."
The small-market Thunder had already signed Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka to long-term deals, and apparently realized Harden was going to want a bigger salary than they would offer.
The Thunder got back a good scorer in Martin, who has averaged 18.4 points in his eight NBA seasons, and a promising young player in Lamb, the No. 12 pick in the draft who helped Connecticut win the 2011 NCAA championship. He led Houston's summer league team in scoring with 20 points per game.
But Harden was a huge part of Oklahoma City's success and had said he might even be open to sacrifice dollars in order to stay with the Thunder. But they've been unwilling to climb into the luxury tax, which will only become harsher under the new collective bargaining agreement.
Harden averaged 16.8 points and 3.7 assists last season, and joined Durant and Westbrook on the U.S. men's Olympic team. He struggled badly in Oklahoma City's loss to Miami in the NBA Finals, but the Thunder felt good about their chances of getting back there with another year of experience for their young stars, all 24 or younger.
However, Yahoo Sports reported that Harden turned down a four-year contract worth about $52 million, and the Thunder moved quickly to trade him after that.
The Rockets rebuilt their roster in the offseason and hoped to land Dwight Howard. Houston traded or released just about every veteran except Martin, who was in the final year of his contract and due about $13 million this season.
Martin averaged 17.1 points and 2.8 assists last season, his eighth in the NBA and third in Houston. He missed the last 26 games last season with a shoulder injury, though he also developed a rift with Houston coach Kevin McHale late in the season.
The Rockets have until Wednesday to sign Harden to the extension that Oklahoma City couldn't.
"While I never like having to send out quality players like Kevin Martin and Jeremy Lamb, this trade gives us a chance to make an immediate impact on the future of our franchise moving forward," Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said.
"James Harden was part of Team USA's gold medal team at the London Olympics and is one of the most skilled shooting guards in the NBA."
New Rockets point guard Jeremy Lin also chimed in about the trade on Twitter.
"Really sad to see Kmart and JLamb go," Lin wrote. "...both class acts and great teammates. Welcome Harden, Cook, Aldrich and Hayward to Houston!!"
Houston collected draft picks while it was making a flurry of deals, part of a package to offer Orlando for Howard. The Rockets traded point guard Kyle Lowry to Toronto for a lottery-protected first-round pick, one of Oklahoma City's acquisitions on Saturday night.
The other first-round pick was acquired by Houston when it traded Jordan Hill to the Los Angeles Lakers last March. The second-round pick came to the Rockets in a deal that sent guard Courtney Lee to Boston.

Sprint's latest financials show that while the network is slowly stemming the flow of cash from its veins, it's not quite there in terms of turning a profit. The country's third biggest carrier suffered a $767 million net loss and an operating loss of $231 million -- much less than the $629 million operating loss it had in Q2, but on-par with the $208 million lost in the same period last year. The business did manage to bring in total revenues of $8.8 billion, but had to take a hit on a $397 million write-down on costs related to Network Vision and the continued pain of the Nextel shutdown.
On the customer size, it added a further 900,000 users, sold 1.5 million iPhones and a further 1 million "LTE smartphones" in the quarter. Those with long memories will know that the company sold the same number of Apple handsets in the last two quarters, with around 40 percent going to new customers then as now. However, churn, the deadly enemy of all carriers, increased to 1.88 percent, up from 1.69 percent in Q2. The network did manage to coax 59 percent of former Nextel customers to stay tied up with Big Yellow, which may account for it selling nearly 1.2 million Direct Connect devices. While it's hardly a rosy estimation of Sprint's financial health, this report doesn't take into account Softbank's $20.1 billion buy-out or the regained controlling stake in Clearwire -- so we're expecting the next financial announcement to contain some more exciting news.
Update: During the conference call, Dan Hesse was asked about adopting a shared data plan to rival Verizon and AT&T, but unlike the last call, he was dismissive of the idea.

(Reuters) - AT&T Inc posted third-quarter revenue below Wall Street estimates as it added fewer customers than expected, citing a shortage of the latest Apple Inc iPhone.
The No. 2 U.S. mobile service provider said it had 151,000 net new subscribers in the quarter, compared with the average expectation for 358,000, according to five analysts contacted by Reuters.
Its bigger rival, Verizon Wireless, added 1.5 million subscribers in the quarter.
AT&T said a shortage of the latest iPhone, which went on sale in the last week of the quarter, meant that the vast majority of third-quarter iPhone sales went to existing customers, stunting its growth of new customers.
Slow customer growth likely helped the company post better-than-expected earnings for the quarter as new customers come with a hefty cost for wireless service providers.
AT&T's profit rose to $3.64 billion, or 63 cents per share, from $3.62 billion, or 61 cents per share, and was 3 cents ahead of Wall Street expectations, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
However, revenue fell to $31.46 billion from $31.48 billion and missed the analysts' average estimate of $31.59 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
The company also raised its target for 2012 free cash flow by $2 billion to $18 billion.
Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc.

OSLO | Tue Oct 23, 2012 9:13am BST
OSLO (Reuters) - IKEA, the world's largest furniture retailer, will shift to renewable energy by 2020 and grow more trees than it uses under a plan to safeguard nature that has won support from environmentalists.
The Swedish-based group, which wants to build on many customers' desire for a greener lifestyle, also said on Tuesday it would limit sales by 2016 to energy-efficient products including induction cookers and LED light bulbs.
"This will be a great driver of innovation," said Mikael Ohlsson, chief executive of the firm which is known for its flat-packs and giant stores that are expected to be visited by 776 million people this year.
Ohlsson told Reuters he had no doubt the "People & Planet Positive" strategy would save money both for IKEA and its clients, although he declined to estimate total savings.
Under the plan, IKEA will invest 1.5 billion euros ($1.95 billion) from 2009-15 in solar and wind power to produce at least 70 percent of the group's energy. By 2020 it would produce as much renewable energy as it consumes.
IKEA already owns wind farms in six European nations and has 342,000 solar panels on its stores, warehouses and factories that generate 27 percent of the group's electricity.
"We are a little under half-way in terms of investments" to the 2015 goal, said Steve Howard, chief sustainability officer. The company would also halve its greenhouse gas emissions from its operations by 2015, from 2010 levels.
By 2020 IKEA, one of the world's top users of wood, will grow at least as many trees as it uses to make products such as beds or cupboards. Already, IKEA says it does not take wood from natural tropical forests, such as in the Amazon or the Congo basins.
BACKING THE SHIFT
By 2017 it would buy 10 million cubic metres of wood - half the projected total for that year and four times current amounts - from sources such as those certified by the non-profit Forest Stewardship Council.
Environmentalists backed the shift. John Sauven, head of Greenpeace UK, said it "puts IKEA at the forefront of leading companies" trying to transform their businesses in the face of environmental threats.
Mark Kenber, head of the UK-based Climate Group think-tank, said IKEA's plan was a roadmap to a "clean industrial revolution" and urged other businesses to follow.
Both Kenber and Greenpeace confirmed the remarks, provided by IKEA. The firm said other environmental experts had praised the strategy, including the WWF conservation organisation.
Many companies, from chip maker Intel Corp (INTC.O) to Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N), are setting green goals and moving towards renewable energy as part of efforts to combat global warming and ensure supplies.
As part of the shift to energy-efficient products, induction hobs use 40 percent less energy than conventional cookers.
IKEA announced the shift to LED lighting, which can last 20 years, earlier this month. Changing all 12 billion incandescent bulbs worldwide to LEDs would cut global greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of the Netherlands.
A shift to more efficient appliances, such as fridges, cookers or lightbulbs, would reduce energy use by the average household by 30 percent. "That is like having a 10 percent pay rise for most people," Howard said.
IKEA also set stricter targets for palm oil, leather and cotton supplies. It would tighten bans on child labour and enforce workers' rights, partly with unannounced audits of suppliers. The company would also ensure greater supplies of clean water in communities where it operates, cut waste and promote recycling.
IKEA predicted the number of visitors to its stores would double to 1.5 billion by 2020, and forecast a potential 45-50 billion euros in turnover, up from 27.5 billion for 2012.
It predicted the number of stores would rise to 500 from 338 and that staff numbers would rise to above 200,000 from 154,000.
Ohlsson said IKEA had freedom to act partly because it is not listed on a stock market. "We are owned by a foundation, it means also that our whole focus is customers throughout the chain and not stock exchange and owners," he said. ($1 = 0.7674 euros)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Arlington National Cemetery on Monday made available to the public a massive electronic database detailing the gravesites of the roughly 400,000 people buried there.
Cemetery officials built the database over the last two years to verify the accuracy of their records brought into question by reports of misidentified graves. Prior to 2010, the cemetery used paper records and maps to track who is buried where.
On Monday at the Association of the United States Army convention in Washington, the cemetery debuted an interactive map available through its website and through a free smartphone app. It uses geospatial technology to hone in on specific graves and can also be searched by name.
It can be accessed through the cemetery's website www.arlingtoncemetery.mil
When a name is called up, a viewer can see when the person was buried and the dates of their birth and death. Photos of the front and back of the headstone can also be viewed. Monuments and memorials that commemorate the service of specific military units are also included in the database.
The application also highlights some of the notable graves throughout the cemetery that are popular with the roughly 4 million visitors annually that the cemetery draws.
"This is a great day for veterans and our families," said Kathryn Condon, executive director of the Army National Military Cemeteries, which includes Arlington.
Officials say the new app makes it easier for people walking the cemetery to locate a loved one's burial place. The app can be downloaded at the cemetery's visitor center.
The database has been the subject of a painstaking review and even now is not 100 percent complete. Katharine Kelley, the cemetery's director of accountability, said that about 99.4 percent of the nearly 260,000 gravesites, niches and markers have been verified.
The remaining few deal largely with some of the cemetery's oldest graves and records, which date to the Civil War. In many cases, it may be an effort to verify the spelling of the first name of a spouse buried at the cemetery among disparate handwritten records.
Condon said she could not say how much it cost to develop the website and mobile app, largely because the work to develop the technology was conducted in house.
The geospatial technology used to power the smartphone is the same that the cemetery uses to coordinate the 25 to 30 burials conducted there every day. Care is taken to ensure, for example, that maintenance work at the cemetery is not conducted at the same time and place as a burial service.
Arlington officials say the cemetery is one of the most technically advanced in the nation.

As Nigeria moves to create a broadband development policy that will lead to affordable and pervasive internet penetration, CHIMA AKWAJA takes a look at the several challenges and opportunities that broadband will create for the entire economy.
In the last 11 years, much progress was made in Nigeria in the area of voice telephony leading to over 105 million active lines, emergence of four active Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) networks, several Unified Access Service Licence (UASL) operators and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) operators. Despite Nigeria?s success achieved with voice telephony, the country performed below expectation in the area of broadband.
Recently President Goodluck Jonathan inaugurated a Presidential Committee on Broadband Development to come up with a proactive broadband development roadmap that would see Nigeria emerge a digital economy in the next few years by developing critical infrastructures, local content capabilities and capitalise on the country?s abundant intellectual resources in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) field.
The presidential committee has Ernest Ndukwe, former executive vice chairman of Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Jim Ovia, chairman of Visafone as joint co-chairmen.
Nigeria?s Poor Broadband Rating
Nigeria came behind several African nations on the broadband penetration in a survey conducted by Broadband Commission for Digital Development. Nigeria was last month ranked a distant 100 out of 172 countries on the global mobile broadband penetration list with only 2.8 per cent of its 100 households having access to active mobile broadband subscriptions.
In a special survey publication entitled ?The State of Broadband 2012: Achieving Digital Inclusion For All? written by Broadband Commission for Digital Development, Nigeria performed poorly behind Ghana who was placed at 40 with 23 per cent, Egypt at 44 with 21 per cent, South Africa at 47 with 19.8 per cent, Zimbabwe at 59 with 14.9 per cent and several other African countries.
On fixed mobile broadband penetration, Nigeria was ranked numbered 136 with 0.1 per cent of fixed (wired) broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants with access out of 172 countries surveyed in 2011. The report said high-speed affordable broadband connectivity to the Internet is essential to modern society, offering widely recognised economic and social benefits.
The Broadband Commission report has Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Luxemburg, USA, United Kingdom and Qatar on the top 10 list of countries whose citizens have the most access to active mobile broadband penetration.
Singapore and South Korea, the most connected countries in the world, their households have 110.9 per cent and 105.1 per cent broadband Internet access respectively.
In another study on broadband penetration across the globe, entitled, ?Measuring State of the Internet Society? survey released by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) few days ago, Nigeria?s ICT Development Index (IDI) was placed at 122 out of 155 countries.
In the Measuring, the Information Society 2012 report identified countries which have made the most progress to ICT development, most of them located in the developing world with strong performers including Bahrain, Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda and Saudi Arabia. It ranks the Republic of Korea as the world?s most advanced ICT economy, followed by Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland.
Why We Should Get It Right
For Nigeria that boasts as the giant of Africa, coming behind the 100 mark in the ICT development index shows that a lot needs to be done by the Presidential Committee on Broadband Development, Ministry of Communications Technology, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), broadband service providers and agencies of government involved in broadband development and provision such as Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (Nigcomsat) and Galaxy Backbone Plc.
For years, Nigerian ICT media had set agenda for the government to come up with a clear cut roadmap for broadband development. Instead, emphasis was laid on the dividends made from voice telephony revolution while citizens were made to believe that broadband policy was underway. It was not until Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, formed the presidential broadband committee, that something was seen to be done to practically realise the country?s broadband ambition.
In 2010, Association of Telecommunications companies of Nigeria (ATCON) came up with a Framework for Broadband For Nigeria (BB4NG), a document which demanded that broadband internet access be made a fundamental human right and at the same time address the broadband imbalance in Nigeria. That document was later transformed into Broadband Expansion Programme (BEP), which was a precursor to NCC?s adoption of Equal Access Model to facilitate the development of broadband.
The open access model is already being implemented in countries like Singapore and Australia.
Executive vice chairman of NCC, Dr. Eugene Juwah, said ?The Open Access Model is expected to help Nigerian?s plug into the global knowledge grid and stay competitive with other countries.?
The key elements driving the objective focus on open access deployment of fibre infrastructure is to achieve high level of penetration across all geo-political zones, contribute to GDP growth and development of knowledge economy, provide competitive and affordable pricing, ensure intelligent incentives to support industry players while equipping Nigeria with? leading infrastructure in Africa.
Why Broadband Is Critical
Mobile broadband continues to be the ICT service displaying the sharpest growth rates. Over the past year, growth in mobile-broadband services continued at 40 per cent globally and 78 per cent in developing countries. There are now twice as many mobile-broadband subscriptions as fixed-broadband subscriptions worldwide.
Brahima Sanou, director of ITU?s Telecommunication Development Bureau, said, ?The surge in numbers of mobile-broadband subscriptions in developing countries has brought the Internet to a multitude of new users. But despite the downward trend, prices remain relatively high in many low-income countries. For mobile broadband to replicate the mobile-cellular miracle and bring more people from developing countries online, 3G network coverage has to be extended and prices have to go down even further.?
Currently, data traffic in West Africa is lower than voice. However, operators have reported that the demand for data services is doubling every six months. Operators expect that data will account for 60 per cent of total traffic on 2G and 2.5G networks, and approximately 90 per cent on 3G networks by the end of 2012. In addition with cables landing in most of the countries in the region, the global connectivity is in much better shape than ever before and will be the driver for data growth in the region.???
Mayank Sharma, Vice President, Africa Region, Comviva said, ?Over the last year operators in West Africa have witnessed huge demand for mobile data, especially in countries like Cote d?Ivoire, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon. For this they need solutions that can complement their infrastructure and help them launch innovative data services to boost revenues and also ensure efficient network management to minimise the revenue leakages and cost overheads?.?
The critical importance of broadband policy for Nigeria is that it will ensure cost reduction and transparency in governance, create ubiquitous and cost effective national ICT infrastructure, ensure a multi-faceted strategy that enables equitable access to the infrastructure and allow citizen engagement and convenient delivery of government information and services.
A very practical policy will see to strong support for the development of education, health, agriculture and financial services on the ICT infrastructure, local content and skills development to create jobs and sustain the industry as well as ensure ICT entrepreneurship, innovation and the development of a strong and vibrant ICT industry as well as drive technology adoption across the national economy in general.
Broadband Essentials
Engr. Titi Omo-Ettu, former president of ATCON said ?There are three things you need to invest. The first one is infrastructure which needs to be there. The second is content that you can sell if the infrastructure is there and the third is the advantage of ruralness, what can I get from rural areas. I?m going to make people to come and talk to anybody who want to hear and who has any of the four things: the brain, will, enthusiasm and resources.?
To do the above, Nigeria needs to facilitate build-out of a robust, ubiquitous and cost effective broadband network aimed at increasing broadband penetration within the country. This will facilitate the accelerated roll out of a broadband infrastructure that includes a connected national backbone, regional rings, metro rings and fibre to the cabinet that should increase broadband penetration from six per cent to about 20 per cent by 2015.?
?Imagine the benefits of broadband education- in the area of e - learning, health-telemedicine, patient data collection and health records access, to the business community-wider customer and supplier base for SME?s, Agriculture - create access to information on good cultivation practices for farmers as well as access to market prices, removal of intermediaries etc, said Johnson.
Currently, 45 million Nigerians or approximately 28 per cent of our population have access to the internet. We are working to ensure that Nigeria?s broadband infrastructure is delivered through a heterogeneous network of fiber optic cable, mobile broadband and satellite bandwidth. ?We are deploying these heterogeneous networks to enable us deliver on our internal and external targets and increase broadband penetration in the country,? Johnson said.

A firefighter examines the flames as a fire sweeps through Bucyrus, N.D., on Wednesday night.
By Miguel Llanos, NBC News
When a grassfire destroyed most of tiny Bucyrus, N.D., this week, the "perfect firestorm" of conditions served as a reminder that the long-term drought, combined with unpredictable winds, makes for severe fire danger across the central U.S., even in the middle of autumn.
Four homes and 20 other structures were lost after the fire broke out Wednesday afternoon. Fanned by winds up to 70 mph, it consumed at least 6,000 acres and traveled 10 miles by Thursday morning, The Dickinson Press reported.
"This is like a nightmare," Linda Wiskus told The Dickinson Press. "I wouldn?t wish this on anyone. ... We had about 15 minutes to get what we could. I grabbed a safe, a pair of jeans and some socks ? I didn?t have time to get anything else."
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but?Bucyrus is in a county that's been in continued drought since October 2011,?Adnan Akyuz, North Dakota's state climatologist, told NBC News. Conditions got even worse starting Oct. 2.
"When you combine warm, dry and windy conditions, it creates a perfect setting for elevated fire danger," Akyuz noted. Adding drought to that mix, he said, "makes it more dangerous conditions for fire."
"Red flag" fire warnings have been issued "frequently this summer and fall in the area," he added.
Located in southwest North Dakota, the county has also had the lowest amount of?precipitation?in the state over the last two months.
While about average for the last decade, the number of wildfires across the state this year is higher than the three previous years, which saw lots of rain and flooding, said Cecily Fong, a spokeswoman for the state's Department of Emergency Services.
"Typically, the southwest corner and western part of our state are more prone to wildfires, but they can really occur anywhere if we go into severe drought, which we think we may be doing now," she told NBC News.
A top meteorologist at the federal command post for fighting wildfires said the time of year, combined with the dry grass, wind and drought made for prime fire conditions in North Dakota.
PhotoBlog:?Resident returns to destroyed home
"People burning leaves" this time of year is another worry, Ed Delgado, of the National Interagency Fire Center, told NBC News. But he was also hopeful the fire season would see a "very quick decline" as it gets colder and wetter.
Akyuz said putting out North Dakota's 2012 fire season "all depends on the snow cover."
"Our winter snow cover lasts from November through March," he added. "Even though it may be a dry winter, it is unlikely that the entire winter will be snow free."
For some of the 27 residents of Bucyrus, that's little comfort.
Evelyn and Mike Krug were among those who lost their home, The Dickinson Press reported. Asked what she and neighbors might do next, Evelyn shook her head and said only, "I don't know."

Fans who have not gotten their fill of flappers, bootleggers and roaring '20s glitz and glamour from recent TV shows and movies like HBO?s ?Boardwalk Empire? and ?Lawless? can delve a little deeper into the Prohibition era at a new exhibit at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.
At "American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition," which opens on Friday, visitors can find out about real-life legends like Al Capone, learn to dance the Charleston at a recreated speakeasy, join gangsters in a mock criminal lineup for a photo opportunity and play the role of a federal agent tracking down rumrunners from the seat of a speedboat in a custom video game.
Related: Homes where mobsters hid out
The exhibit was about three years in the making, said Stephanie Reyer, vice president of exhibitions for the Center.??We knew this was a good story,? she said. ?It captures the imagination of the American people,??covering everything from social change and popular culture, including music and clothing of the period, to important lessons in history about the temperance movement and how government works.
The 18th Amendment, which imposed the federal prohibition of alcohol, ?is essentially the only amendment ever passed that limited personal freedom,? aside from the 13th, which limited slave ownership, Reyer said.??And it?s the only amendment ever to be repealed.?
Prohibition was the period from 1920 to 1933 when there was a federal law forbidding?the making or selling of alcoholic beverages.
Daniel Okrent?the show?s curator and author of ?Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition,? the book that inspired ?American Spirits??said the exhibition highlights the impact of the American political process , which has affected everything from personal habits to tax policies, and also helps shed light on lesser-known luminaries of the era.
Wayne Wheeler, an attorney for the Anti-Saloon League?a lobbying organization?for Prohibition?used his political skill to influence the government. He was the Karl Rove of his day, ?the political genius that made it happen,? Okrent said.?And Mabel Walker Willebrandt, who served as assistant attorney general for eight years during Prohibition, ?was the best known woman in America at the time,? Okrent said, apart from actresses and singers. ?Now,? he said, ?nobody knows her.?
Displays will show why and how laws differ from state to state and how the idea of drinking responsibly has evolved since the 1930s. Some exhibits debunk myths, Reyer said, like one that allows visitors to sit in a?recreated pew from an early 1900s church to take a quiz to find out if they would have been ?wet? or ?dry? sympathizers. She said?people are often surprised to learn that many women during Prohibition would have voted ?dry,? as the suffrage movement?which worked to gain women's right to vote?was aligned with the temperance movement.
The exhibit will feature more than 120 rare artifacts, including: temperance propaganda; original ratification copies of the 18th and 21st Amendments; authentic barware; original home manufacturing items used for making moonshine, homebrewed beer and other liquor; the hatchet used by Carry Nation, a colorful member of the temperance movement, during a barroom-smashing raid; and the phone used by Roy Olmstead,?the defendant in a landmark wiretapping case,?to run his bootlegging empire.
?They are real-life artifacts that really draw you in and put you in the time period,? said Reyer. ?We've tried to make it playful, engaging and fun, [and] as accessible as possible. Every surface is a learning opportunity.?
Admission is $17.50 for adults, $16 for seniors and students, and $11 for children ages 4-12. The exhibit will run through April 28, 2013, after which it will tour a number of U.S. cities.
But stepping back in time does not end at the center?s exit.
Several bars and taverns that operated during the prohibition are in business today in the Philadelphia area, like the still family-owned McNally's Tavern?where a citation from a 1920s enforcement raid hangs by the door?and the Cherry Street Tavern that replaced its bar with a barber's chair during Prohibition.??But patrons were able to get more than a shave and a haircut,? according to The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation, which lists Prohibition-era related activities on its website.
Visitors to the Eastern State Penitentiary can see Al Capone?s cell (complete with lavish paintings, polished desk and a high-end cabinet radio receiver), or stop by Betty's Speakeasy, a storefront and caf? where local beers and spirits are tucked into ?Bootleggers? cupcakes.

Bicycle theft is a rampant problem in this country; even if you lock your bike properly, professional thieves can still take it. Priceonomic's new site Racklove is not only a nice place to buy and sell bikes, it's a way to search for your stolen bike.
The stolen bike finder webapp searches everywhere thieves could be trying to sell your bike online, including Craigslist and Ebay. If you find a match for your bike, you could meet with the seller under the pretense of wanting to buy, and see if the serial number matches. (The serial number is found in your owner's manual and usually on the underside of the bike. This site shows locations of bike serial numbers for different manufacturers.) If you've found your stolen bike, then get the police involved.
Racklove is also a nice community for buying and selling bikes (as opposed to Craigslist where lots of stolen bikes get flipped). The Racklove folks are trying to help end bicycle theft and encourage the ad descriptions to show you're the owner of the bike you're selling. You can search by bike type as well as your height. I found a couple of bike shops around the country selling old and new bicycles for decent prices (some with free shipping).
If you're a bike lover, go ahead and check Racklove out.

MILAN, Italy (Reuters) - Italy's passion for eating is world famous but more than half of Italians are now recycling food leftovers to prepare new meals as they try to save money and weather a year-long recession, a survey showed on Friday.
The survey, by food-producing association Coldiretti, said 59 percent of Italians were re-using pasta, bread and vegetables to try to make ends meet, a trend that underlines how austerity measures and unemployment are hitting people's wallets.
Italy wasted 10 million tonnes of food each year worth around 11 billion euros ($14.40 billion), the survey said.
But the research, conducted with statistical group SWG and called "Italians' behavior at a time of crisis", suggested Italians could make a virtue of necessity.
"Anti-waste recipes are numerous in Italy," Sergio Marini, the chairman of Coldiretti, said at the presentation of the report.
"You only need a little creativity and you can cook tasty meatballs with leftover ground beef, eggs, bread and cheese," Marini said.
Although Italy is a country of rich culinary traditions most of them are based on poor ingredients as they date back to the end of World War Two, when food was scarce.
The Tuscan "ribollita", the Venetian "pinza" or the Neapolitan "frittata of pasta" sound like gourmet meals but all are based on recycled ingredients such as pasta and vegetables.
Consumer spending is headed for its biggest post-World War Two decline this year and data from ISTAT shows consumer morale has only recovered slightly from a historic low hit in June, retail lobby Confcommercio said last month.
Coldiretti said one in four Italian families was in a difficult economic position, 3 percent more than last year.
A planned one-percentage-point hike in value added tax, due to come into effect in July next year, could cost families a further 500 million euros in higher prices, Coldiretti said.

An outbreak of deadly fungal meningitis linked to steroid injections has raised the question of whether people who received the shots, but don't have meningitis symptoms, should take anti-fungal drugs to prevent disease.
For now, health officials are not recommending use of the drugs as a preventative treatment, but that advice could change as officials learn more about the outbreak, experts say.
So far, 257 people have been diagnosed with meningitis after receiving contaminated steroid injections in the spine as a treatment for back pain, and of these, 20 have died. More cases are expected as the outbreak continues to unfold.
But around 14,000 people may have been exposed to the fungus through contaminated shots. Most of these people have been contacted by health officials to notify them of their potential risk for infection, and the Food and Drug Administration has warned about being vigilant for symptoms. The hope is that the disease can be diagnosed early so treatment can begin as soon as possible, said Curtis Allen, a spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Patients who develop meningitis are being treated with the anti-fungal drug voriconazole.
Whenever doctors prescribe a drug, they must consider the benefits of the medication against its risks. And currently, doctors don't know whether the drug ? aimed at treating existing fungal infections ? could also prevent the disease.
"The possible benefits are immeasurable," Allen said.
While anti-fungal medications are used to prevent fungal diseases in some cases, such as with cancer and transplant patients, they have not been used to before to prevent this particular form of meningitis, said Dr. Peter Pappas, a fungal disease expert who is advising the CDC in the current outbreak.
The vast majority of meningitis cases in the outbreak have been caused by the fungus Exserohilum ? a fungus never before linked with meningitis. So doctors don't know how long patients would need to stay on the medications to sufficiently ward off a potential infection, Pappas said.
In addition, anti-fungal medications have dangerous side effects, including hallucinations, kidney damage and hepatitis. Most people on the drugs experience some side effects, the mildest of which is nausea, Pappas said.
"The medication used to treat this is pretty tough on people," Pappas said. "If this were penicillin or something that could be administered for a few doses over the course of a few days?perhaps that would make better sense," he said.
While a particularly concerned patient could, in theory, get a doctor to prescribe this medication to prevent fungal meningitis, "we do not think that a wise approach," Pappas said.
However, if officials are able to identify factors that put people at high risk for the disease, such as information about who received doses that were heavily contaminated, that might change the recommendation, at least for some people.
"If they could identify lots of this where a large percentage of patients are getting actual infections, you could make a case," for giving the drugs as a prevention measure, Pappas said.
Another reason the CDC might decide to change its recommendation is if it turns out doctors are not able to diagnose the condition early, said Dr. Thomas Patterson, chief of the division of infectious diseases at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, who is also advising the CDC.
But, fortunately, it appears so far that doctors have been able to make early diagnoses, Patterson said.
For now, the low percentage of cases (about 2 percent of exposed people), and the low mortality rate from the disease (about 8 percent), suggest that the current recommendations are working, Pappas said.
Pass it on: Health officials are not recommending anti-fungal medication as a preventative treatment in the meningitis outbreak, but that could change as more is learned.

HURDAL, Norway/BOGOTA (Reuters) - Colombian government and leftist rebel negotiators agreed to meet in Cuba in mid-November to start what are likely to be thorny peace talks aimed at patching together an end to half a century of conflict, both sides said on Thursday.
Talks, which opened in Norway this week, are the latest in a long history of attempts to resolve the war which has left tens of thousands dead and millions more displaced since the founding of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, in 1964.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos is betting that a decade of U.S.-backed blows against the FARC has battered the group to the point it will seriously seek to end the fighting after so many previous efforts ended in shambles.
But in the first sign of discord, rebel leader Ivan Marquez slammed foreign oil and mining interests in Colombia, saying their presence was destructive and should be discussed. Humberto de la Calle, the government's lead negotiator, ruled that out.
"The peace process will be successful if it is serious, realistic and efficient," de la Calle said in Hurdal, Norway.
"We are not discussing the model of economic development. We are not discussing foreign investment. For that to be discussed on the Colombian agenda, the FARC have to lay down their arms, enter politics and win elections," he said.
In a carefully stage-managed event, Norwegian organizers were able to avoid what became a symbol of the failure of the last attempt at peace in 1999: a vacant chair. Back then, a red-faced President Andres Pastrana sat next to the empty seat of FARC founder Manuel Marulanda, who failed to turn up.
This time, the two sides appeared jointly on Thursday at a plush hotel - the first time they have met publicly in a decade. The negotiators entered the conference room together, then sat at a table with representatives of Cuba and Norway between them. They did not talk or shake hands.
The government delegation sat stone-faced as Marquez spoke for half an hour following short opening remarks by de la Calle. The sides then held separate press conferences.
The negotiations move to Cuba on November 15 and will begin a five-point agenda with discussions about rural development. The last talks were held in a tent deep in the Colombian jungle.
"The spirit of the agreement is clear and you don't need to find a theologian to interpret it. We'll work within the spirit," said FARC negotiator Jesus Santrich, wearing dark glasses and carrying a walking cane.
"We are embracing this process and I would like to say to (de la Calle): ?take it easy, we're just starting.'"
"LONG PROCESS"
Peace with the FARC will by no means end violence in Colombia as drug trafficking and criminal gangs - many born out of the demobilization of right-wing paramilitary groups - will continue to operate across the nation.
Many Colombians believe it will be impossible to absorb the thousands of FARC fighters, many of whom are illiterate, into an already difficult job market, and there are fears some rebels could turn to cocaine trafficking.
Although ten years of strikes against the FARC - which has funded its war by kidnapping, extortion and drugs - have cut its ranks by more than half and put its leadership on the run, defeating the rebels with military means alone has proved difficult, leaving a negotiated deal as the best alternative.
Santos, who faces re-election in 2014, says the government wants to reach a deal in a matter of months, not years, while the FARC says it will sit at the table as long as necessary, which was reiterated by Marquez at the opening of the new talks.
"Marquez's expressed opposition to achieving a peace agreement ?against the clock' is a clear signal that the group will attempt to prolong and extend the process as long as possible," said James Lockhart Smith of the Maplecroft risk consultancy.
"There is very unlikely to be a definitive agreement ... before the campaign for the 2014 presidential elections begins again in Colombia."
In a tone reminiscent of previous FARC statements, Marquez criticized international mining companies and rich Colombians for buying up land at the expense of the rural poor, accusing by name the sons of former President Alvaro Uribe.
Uribe, credited for the U.S.-backed offensive that weakened the FARC, is among the most vocal critics of the talks, saying Santos has sold out in a bid for a place in the history books at the expense of security. Uribe denied Marquez's accusations in a Twitter message on Thursday.
KIDNAP VICTIMS
Latin America's fourth-largest oil producer has seen a boom in oil and mining investment over the past decade, as improved security attracted an influx of dollars. Santos' government has called the sector a "locomotive" for growth.
The bearded and bespectacled Marquez, wearing a dark suit and white shirt, lashed out specifically at Cerrejon, Drummond, BHP Billiton and AngloGold Ashanti Ltd
"The energy and mining locomotive is like a demon of social-environmental destruction. If the people do not stop it, in less than a decade it will convert Colombia into an unviable country," Marquez said.
Foreign direct investment this year is expected to reach about $17 billion, a record, and well above the $2 billion it attracted in 2002 when Uribe took office. Back then, the FARC was at its strongest and able to launch attacks in Bogota.
In the capital, dozens of family members of FARC kidnap victims gathered in a main square, wearing black T-shirts with color photos of their missing parents, sons and daughters.
"We want to know the truth. We want them to give us back our family members," Amparo Bustos, whose 71-year-old father is being held by the rebels, said in an appeal on local television.
"Alive or dead, we want to know the truth."
